I personally use algebra in a daily basis even though it's not part of my job and even without counting school, but that's just because I'm a science geek.

It makes perfect sense. If you hate doing something, and someone makes you do it anyways, you'll resent them for it. Some people are proud of not cooking because of its gender overtones (males being masculine, females being independent). While others resent foreign languages due to ethnocentrism. I loathed music because I'm tone deaf, though I feel no pride or rancour regarding my lack of skill and no one would imply that playing a musical instrument was a determining factor in my life.  In all three cases -- music, secondary languages, and home economics -- the social and academic pressure to prevail is no where near as forcible as it is with mathematics.  Math's significance in academics has steadily increased as time has gone by, next to being functionally literate in the national language it's usually the one that bears the most weight in your curriculum.

When people brag that indeed "they never used that" branch or field of mathematics -- it's less a statement of validating professed ignorance, and more an affirmation that they themselves succeeded in spite of the heavily implied if not directly stated understanding that their professional life and personal happiness would be adversely affected had they not learned the subject matter proficiently. It's a unconscious display of catharsis from being released from the chaffing of social pressure which was once deeply stressful to the person. It's the inverse to what some mathematically oriented people feel, a particular form of narcissism based on their capacity to live up to those expectations while others did not.

Which, again, is simply absent in discussions of linguistics, musical ability, and the capacity to cook.

Paying minimal attention to the useless qualitative "rigorous definitions" in every formal math lesson, math is a cakewalk for me. If it's in stone (i.e. texts) and the critical details are covered already, I don't need to see "Let x be a real number in domain D" every single time to get the point straight. /rant

Anyway, math is not merely numbers (that's number theory), due to the fact we can define purely symbolic formulae. Everyone who says "math sucks" clearly has no insight to what it is, or only take it as it is given to them in schooling (quite unfortunate, with the retarded curricula and all :P).

Lonely virgins love math  8) .

Until you meet another lonely virgin who also loves math.

Yeah am a moron who would rather go out drinking with his mates, or watch the football. Basically what you would call normal male behavior....

. . .this post is full of wrong and full of fail

you people that dont like math

Please take 27 minutes of your time
and comeback and tell me how useless math is. . .

Well that was quite a spirited discussion wasn't it?

And yes AceD, everyone that likes math much be a virgin and a loner and must not have any other interests. By the same logic, everyone that likes Anime must be a completely annoying fuck who's obsessed with Japanese culture and spends their time trying to convince people how much better Japan is better then their country.

See my point :)

And we learn math because it helps us think, logic is based off math, even if we didn't know it when we started doing it. Most intros to Philosophy have a large portion of logic, which is a sliver of discrete math. Same reason why they make you learn physics in most science programs is that it helps you learn how to model things better.

I'm gunna leave you anyway.

Obviously, i was joking with that part....like i really think anybody who has an interest in X (X can be anything) is always going to be a sad loner.  ::)

I thought the  8) might of gave it away, well guess not  :P

Nay...logic existed way before math (not talking about logical symbols), and physics is basically the main branch of science, i.e. all other (real) scientific fields are founded from it.

math existed before human kind. . .even before logic. . .

say, a universe without humans, without anything, just being there. . .regardless of our existence, pi will be 3.14159. . .
C^2=A^2+B^2 in a right triangle will hold true
1+1 will still be 2. . .

Lol there's lots of branches to Psychology, and quite a few of them involve analyzing the unmapped brain so lots of it is just shots in the dark. But quite a bit of it is making predictions based on Bio-feed back or something of the sort. Also, Psychology as a science is quite related to Biology, maybe not as an art, that's typically mixed up with Philosophy.

I don't really consider math a science. It's a tool, an excellent multi-purpose tool, but nothing more.

Do you call a physicist's, piece of paper, pen and glasses as science? If not, why should one count math?

Sciences are fields of knowledge acquired using the scientific method. Math doesn't use the scientific method, therefor it is not a science. Sociology does use it, even though it doesn't work that well, therefor sociology is a science.
Don't just assume that you are right. Verify with the best tools available and if you are wrong, change your mind and you will become right.

Mathematics is an umbrella terms for a group of related sciences. Geometry, algebra, calculus, statistics, and so on. It is, to borrow the dictionary definition, the systematic understanding of the relationships between figures and forms -- which figures and forms determine the nature of the science.

I studied statistics predominately, a science and a branch of mathematics.

It doesn't use it, since that would violate ethics in most societies. Newly discovered theorems in mathematical field still need to be proven as a fact and they undergo the most brutal scrutiny according to the scientific method. Therefore my statement is that it is the opposite of what you just said in your quote.

Let me rephrase: applications of logic existed way before usage of mathematical expressions. For instance, even the Pythagorean theorem existed before that equation was constructed. As well, mathematics is an extension of applied logic to accommodate quantity transformations (axioms like 1+1=2 need to have been conceived logically).

Just because something uses math, doesn't make it a science, as that would make math itself a science :P. Algorithms analysis is not a science, but every (valid) problem dealt in the field is necessarily a mathematics problem.

Things existed before the study of them, just as they existed before words could be applied to them.  No study or conceptualization of reality can exists without a mind capable of thinking it.

This isn't a chicken and the egg type discussion, math doesn't exists a priori to humanity.

As for logic, valid reasoning is the whole basis for our evolution -- some pre-historic ape was capable of forming coherent thoughts capable of remembering and understanding causality, moreso than simple fight-or-flight instinct but using and acquiring tools or stratagems would result in their long-term survival rather than immediate needs. Such reasoning in abundance was how we became apex predators in spite of physical limitations. Logic, as in a study of such reasoning, or its formalization -- you'd have trouble determining when that came about.

Because biology tells you how things eat, poop, and procreate. Psychology tells you (or tries, to, at least) why and what and whom (in no particular order or association).

And I love math. And My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic.

The linear nature of your Euclidean geometry both confounds and befuddles me.
