Self Destructing Harddrives

Not sure if fake. Press the red button and your harddrives goes up, mission impossible style.

Might be useful here. FYI, hentai is considered child porn and very much illegal. Bible black will net you 12 years in Jail. Fanservice like on Zero no Tsukaima is considered child abuse. I've never heard of it actually enforced tho. This might be useful if they come in larger capacities. Do they sell thermite blocks that you can put on your topmost drivebay?

Between R-15, Zero no Tsukaima, Imouto... (that anime with the rediculously long name), etc. I'll probably go to jail for life if they find my bakabt stash.

I know my friend spent ages figuring out a 'self destruct' for his HDDs. He was 'subtly' asking me about acids and home made explosives and stuff. Apparently he got a decent setup worked to destroy any infringing material... if the cops didn't raid him at 3am. They'd confiscated half his equipment whilst he was still yelling "I'll be down for breakfast in a minute ma"

Two years later. Cops still can't break a basic encryption key. Charges dropped :P

most effective drive wipe? electromagnet,  just make a huge-ass inductor and run it through the outlet.

might pop the breaker too tho.

Blowing it up puts the mind at ease better than a big ass magnet.

I'd much rather have thermite. You know it worked when you see your molten harddrive had burned a hole through the table.

the problem is you'd end up blowing up your room as well, i doubt a cracker sized explosive is enough to put heavy damages onto the drives >,> unless that is you get some really good directional explosives used on demolitions.

unlike magnets can be shielded pretty well, and can be directed as well.

If I really need to I'll take the drive out and lay down the hammer of Justice Shame to it.
What would be more practical would be something like this http://www.smbc-comics.com/index.php?db=comics&id=2610#comic

When life gives you lemons, you clone those lemons and make super lemons.

Seems useful, though normal SSDs can be modified to have this function - just connect some pins of the memory chips together and connect that to the mains. 220V will even create some fireworks, not just smoke.

I guess this is what is happening inside the SSD - the chips get connected to 12V instead of 3.3 or whatever voltage they need, though it may limit the current, since most 3.3V chips would blow up (there would be a chunk missing) if connected to 12V. Destroying magnetic media is more difficult, since the media itself is larger.

There are no directional explosives. The direction is controlled with the form and the ignition, which in turn controls the advancing of the explosion. Simplest way to make it directional would be to put a cover on top of the explosive to hamper it from blasting out of the disk. Just make sure the cover isn't metal or you'll be a bloody cheese after it.

Because we can!

And so...  You'll destroy your computer everytime someone knocks on your doors or...?
If you want to be paranoic, you have to go all the way, install camera systems, install alarms to warn you in advance, never go further than 20 meters from your computer, have everything encrypted and be behind several lines of virtual defenses... Otherwise .. police usually gets the computers before the person in question even notices police is after them, when there is suposed to be evidence there.

Am I the only one that was disappointed by the physical destruction? I was expecting pieces of harddrive to fly everyone... and what do I get? A little smoke.

Will not buy! Then again, I don't need exploding harddrives! XD

You're correct. Plus then your harddrive isn't in flames so you can protest innocence.

I'm gunna leave you anyway.

you can encrypt your holy partition if you need.

Too much work. It's easier to just drop a magnet when the time comes.

Or, you know, not look at child-porn.

I'm gunna leave you anyway.

Those old CRT monitors have metal plates around it for the degauss function right? Would that wipe a harddrive if you put one inside the cage? I wonder if you can make a PC casing out of it.

Build a EM pulse generator.  Something like this with enough power will destroy the computer plus the neighbors as an added befit.  Anything in it effective radius will have damage.  People might look at you strange when they see 1.3u/100KV capacitors hanging around your room though (14”L x 11”W x 25”H and weigh 220 pounds). -- You do not have to build them this big, a gigawatt pulse would be a bit over kill.

If the hard drive is inside the EM field coil itself, it can crush it.

Google EM pulse generator to get some ideas.
Watch a few youtubes where a large EMP pulse can killed the electronics in a car within 50' of the generator.  The EM field is strong enough to reach though the cars metal shell.

meh, coils from relays laid flat on the hdd will be enough to wipe the disk imho.

set it up like this:

Whats the fun in that?

Unless you have smoke, metal flying, sparks shooting out - its just boring.  Massive overkill give that feeling of satisfaction of a job well done.

its not supposedly fun, you're frying your 100$ hdd with its oh-so-precious contents because some police "might've" suspected something fishy with your drives. with a magnet tho you could still re-use the hdd if you don't end up frying the components =P well the hdd platter's contents are magnetically erasable.
