Winzip Registry Optimizer
« on: May 18, 2012, 10:27:02 AM »
Okay, uTorrent kept popping up with a notice asking for an update so i finally let it. And now i've suddenly got a program pop up calling itself Winzip Registry Optimizer and apparently messing with my Registry. WTF???

I've already experienced having a trojan imitate MSE (Which i luckily caught that time) run a system scan and i didn't want that happening again. So i went to task manager and shut down the process with the highest CPU usage. Which seemed to close the rogue program.

I'm running a system scan now with MSE and checking my registry for startup programs that shouldn't be there. I'm posting here now so i can ask if i just got hit by a trojan, and did it come with uTorrent?

BRB, need to go back to scanning.

EDIT: Aw crap. This was supposed to go into the General forum.

no, actually this is the correct place to post that kind of stuff, tho it works on the general as well.

anyway, rouge programs or not, those stuffs shouldn't even be messing around the system, since Win7 pretty much sorts itself out really well.

Edit: oh yea, if it is a trojan or whatever, its pretty hard to clean those up, a reformat would be the best case. plus reformatting is the best optimization there is =P its similar to buying a new car i suppose.

This was originally posted in the Help forum, hence that comment.

Rather than buying a new car, it's more like gutting out the engine and either refreshing it to be like new or replacing it with a new one of the same model, no?

Anyway, on topic. Perhaps that program is provided by the uTorrent installer as an optional third-party program, and you happened to click by it too quickly? Winzip Registry Optimizer seems to be a legitimate program and sounds like exactly the kind of thing that free software normally endorses.

v and vv: Yes, I never said it was a good program, I only said it was legitimate. I never use registry optimizers myself; personally I think they're trash. But in the end, it's somewhat likely that it's not a trojan as initially suspected.

^yea something like that.

but most of the time a registry optimizer only makes the registry more messed up or somewhere in those lines, so its more preferable if you let win7 handle itself, more so if you hardly install stuffs which what causes registry errors. its what people called running a computer clean.

anyway, observe that optimizer if it harms your computer or not if you want to keep it.

I never update my utorrent, still on 1.8.5, but if that did come with utorrent and is a legit program, you should still delete it.  registry optimizers seem to do more harm then good.  Microsoft does a lot better with optimization on win 7 then it did on xp anyway, so there is no need for an optimizer.

2.0.4 was the last good uTorrent version, unfortunately.

Also, the registry is delicate in particular areas, and the things really safe for clearing (iff) is old junk left from installing stuff. There is nothing that can be optimized aside from compacting the hives' sizes.

Well, everything looks good so far. So it looks like  it's clear.

It may have been something i accidentally left checked on the update panel. What really set me off there was that scanning window suddenly appearing and immediately going for the registry without any kind of confirmation or permission dialog. A behaviour i'd only expect from a trojan... Actually, the last trojan alerted me because the confirmation box on that one looked like it came from MSE, but it didn't have a cancel button. This WinZip utility just went ahead without any kind of notice.
