That is no longer true. Due to integrated graphics, most modern 17 inch laptops can offer around or over 3 hours of functional work. If you intend to game it will go back down to 45 minutes.

How modern is modern? My old 17" Core 2 Duo P8400 with Radeon graphics (i.e. not integrated), which I got shortly after the Penryn line was released, can last a little over three hours. I haven't used the battery for years though - it's sitting in my fridge.

hes saying ones with switchable graphics or Nvidia Optimus.

Dunno, but the xps 17/hp envy seem to give roughly 5 and above hours for word work, if you kill the brightness and the wifi. Giving a ~3 hour life when you actually use stuff.

... you probably could get both of those things for cheaper than you'd be spending on a gaming laptop interestingly enough.  And the desktop would play games better than the top of the line laptop ever could. And be way cheaper.
My point.

Also, it's easier to add to a desktop, it's not cost effective to add to a laptop.
If I lived in my hometown in my old house and didn't move around a lot, I'd be debating that a bit more. However, I do not and neither do I entertain the idea of leaving a 2k$ gaming rig in a dorm, while I go back home to visit my parents over an extended break.

I also enjoy working outside. It's not exactly uncommon for me to go out and do my coursework while sitting on a bench in the local park, in a train while going somewhere or the equivalent.

Considering that, I'm very well prepared to exchange an extra 500$ for a good instead of a superb gaming capability with the added bonus of joining a lan party while sitting a top my university's bell tower.

Saras I guess it depends on what kind of dorms you have. I have a room to myself that locks. Hence, I don't mind.

Why not get an Alienware? They're really well built. And I'd imagine you could take advantage of service here in the US.

I had an Asus, it eventually crapped out and Asus' warranty service?

Heh. Forget it. They literally sent me to a shop in the ghetto of los angeles where I was told that I had to go home, load another BIOS, try again, etc...

Never again.

Also, just get a desktop.

Lol they are not that well built, and their battery life is terrible. As well as being horrendously overpriced and pretentious.

The only one i've handled was really solid.

The m14x has pretty good components for its price (I could be wrong, I just glanced over it), especially compared to something like a macbook pro or vaio sb.

I do like the SB though...

If I had a 3k budget i'd just get a vaio z

Most sub 1k laptops arent even worth the trouble.

Spending that amount of money on a laptop, even if it is meant to by your primary machine is...questionable. Especially given the life cycle of them. For 3K you could easily have a top of the line gaming PC and a more then decent laptop,

For a grand you could have a more then adequate PC, and for another 500 you could probably have a decent laptop, or a top end net book.

QFT. Alienware is much like Apple - half of what you're paying is for the brand name, and the other half is for the actual hardware.

I highly doubt that anyone who likes Alienware has actually built a computer before, or has looked at hardware comparisons between Alienware machines and prebuilts from other companies.

If you gave me 3K to spend on a laptop, I would probably spend $1K plus a couple hundred of my own money for a mid-to-high-end laptop (the Asus Zenbook has caught my eye recently), $700 plus a couple hundred for a decent gaming rig, and $1300 plus a couple hundred on a decent used car, or alternatively, a huge TV, since I already have a good used car. That should give you an idea of how much money you're wasting.

I agree with you Kira, the Zenbook does look nice. It is, however, outrageously overpriced.

And on your other points, not a bad idea.

I'm gunna leave you anyway.

Sony Vaio, Apple and Alienware are all premium brand, not budget ones. Aka +20-50%$ on top of what you actually pay for the parts.

I myself wouldn't spend 3k on a laptop either, but I would spend 1.5k. And I suppose my viewpoint on that is different from an american's. After all, everything here costs a quarter more due to VAT alone. And there are no cheap cars, the best I could get for 1300usd is 98' or so golf.

Ouch. But the eyes glow! :(

In the case of the vaio or mbp I'm willing to pay for refinement.

A computer is one of the things you use the most. A little extra on a nice durable case with nice keyboard and trackpad is good by me. And don't lie, you know that mac trackpad feels like orgasms.

Even those clevo/sagers and expensive and let's be honest, they're crap cases. Same with MSi and other brands like that. So many tacky elements and things in the case.

Btw, how much exactly do you overpay for the same setup in a big brand laptop vs a clevo?

Wait. Is Falcon Northwest still around? Score you one of those! And eBay a Voodoo Envy 13 for class notes.

It looks nice at first glance, but it's got some really nice features that you really have to watch a video to see. The demo with the audio system was breathtaking. Plus it's about half the thickness of the Macbook Air. I think it's fairly priced for what you get (I can get it for a bit under $1500 locally).

I hope they'll release an upgraded Ivy Bridge version. The extra boost in battery life and graphics would be pretty sweet.

Here in Canada, you can get an old Civic or Corolla for that price, definitely has to be pre-2000 though.

I picked up a 1997 Lexus LS400 for $3330 last year. My friend is still ranting about how that was the most insane deal ever. I've been looking at used vehicles again lately, and the cheapest '97 LS400 was $5000, posted about a week ago.

Christ.

Someone I know got an '04 Acura TSX for something like 8 grand. Which is impressive.

Anyways, on topic, don't buy a laptop for 3 grand.

That's a lot of money to pay for a laptop.

I wanted to buy this one but had to choose between getting a new laptop or getting a new car and since I can't drive a laptop to work i had to get the car so I settled for a 2006 Chevrolet Trail Blazer ls.

That's around 10 grand on the car, if I'm not mistake.
Also, do we have to go over how bad of an idea gaming laptops are again?

Nope, if he wants the laptop and can afford it then by all means buy it, he knows the pros and cons now so it's up to him.

i have a job where housing is included but there isnt enough space to set up a full high end gaming rig and i dont feel good leaving 3000$ worth of hardware lying around when im away so i thought i might as well go for a laptop
but thinking it over i might be able to get a mini atx case+ a laptop(btw any thoughts on the chromebooks?)
