video editing
« on: May 30, 2012, 07:36:20 PM »
I want to start making AMVs using mkv files. I'm having a hell of a time trying to do so since I have windows 7 64 bit. I've been trying to get virtuldub to work, but no success. Anyone here into doing stuff like this?

4. Profit

I don't know how in the world eveyrone and their mother can be putting out AMVs on Youtube when it's this complicated just to even start to edit. It was so simple back when I had Windows XP. I just used VirtualDubMod to split the MKV file to video, audio and subtitle, then edit from there.

It might help if you elaborated what's up with virtualdub or any tools you're using, otherwise you'll just by googling.

mkvtoolnix does everything you need for now, splice them up and extract them out.
Then you can dub it with your virtual however you want.
I know, I know, that sounded silly, but I know what virtualdub is so I'm not just flinging dung at your face.

Yeah I used mkvtoolnix, but it's having problems splicing the animes that I want to work on. Like the Haruhi movie and Devil May Cry. It doesn't recognize the videos and audio, even though I have all the codecs in the world.

Well then go for commercial software. You don't have to tell the world how you put those videos together, if you know what I mean.

Hey, I'm an editor and used to do AMVs (I'd return to editing, but no time).
Anyways, what I do is play the video in VLC Media Player Classic and use FRAPS to screen record.
Files will be raw and quite large in file size, but that was never an issue for me as I had a 2TB drive dedicated to editing and project storage. Remember to disable subtitles when recording.

I used Sony Vegas Pro, After Effects CS5  & Photoshop CS5 to edit.

IMO, don't take TiYIER's advice.

Also, because you're starting fresh, you may want to watch some good AMVs and M@Ds to form your own unique editing style and so you know what to aim for. I recommend you watch these AMVs and get an idea of what you should try to do:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KUFWjpYIZ8w
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GBY_KuH7QhU

All three AMVs (2nd one is a M@D) are completely different in style.
Don't expect too much on your first time, but please don't throw in a bunch of clips and music and call it an AMV. That's a disgrace and extreme eyesore for the rest of us editors.  :)

If you need any further help editing, PM me ;)
Ah and if you happen to find me on YT, my AMVs there aren't up to my current standards ;)

lol, FCP is the only video editing software I am experienced in (^_^;)

On a serious note, editing is a long and strenuous process. Don't expect much from your first project, and always budget more time than you first think it would take.

lol...heres what you need to put for virtualdub

DirectShowSource("C:\Users\andy\Desktop\filename.mkv")

gives no sound, which is what you would want...render as lagarith or huffy and viola, go edit in whatever you use.

I would use Adobe Premiere Pro... cutting (ctrl k) and editing files is fairly easy to learn.
OR there's aftereffects. OR there's windows movie maker, however it cannot handle mkv.
(come to think of it, I've never tried mkv in premiere either.)

Here's an uneventful MV I made about Ragnarok Online 2: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cxsMVK0lue4

You could try out After Effects.
