Darkest Anime/Manga Series
« on: May 30, 2012, 10:14:18 PM »
Hello Bakabt I come before you to ask you what do you think was the darkest anime/manga you have ever seen?

I know there are going to be alot of votes for Elfen Lied, Higurashi, Umineko, Neon Genesis Evangelion and Death Note but I am curious to learn what else is good to read/watch and rock your self to sleep to at night.  ;)

On a side note which do you think is better Higurashi or Umineko?

Black Lagoon ... seriously fucked up shit. I have yet to see ... another show I can't recall the name. I'm waiting for it to be done on BD so the gore can be uncensored!

Code Geass doesn't fit in the Darkest Anime group, but it also had some fucked up shit (season 1 specially).

Guilty Crown ... this got fucked so hard it took a large dump on people's dreams. But ... HELL YEA INORI!

Oh ... oh oh oh ! One more... god ... Yes! WHEN THEY CRY! :D Omfg that is TOTALLY fucked up shit with cheese ontop. Omg it was AWESOME! It needed MORE blood and gore!

And finally ... we come to Elfen Lied. The first anime to make me think Anime is not what I thought it was ... this is by far the bloodiest UNCUT gore that was burnt pretty hard in my memory. I marathon it at least once every two years.

There's a couple more ...

The VNs of Higurashi were much better. It let you use your imagination  ;) (many many messed up dreams) And it was actually a great story.
So gore = dark series?

I personally think if you haven't read Lychee Hikari Club yet then you haven't been looking for dark stuff. Has yaoi though (not much and no actual sex) so if you absolutely hate that then I guess you should pass. Read the prequel last. It's a good read but it's too messed up to want to read a second time.

I just downloaded the final chiru episode so I'll let you know about my thoughts on Higurashi vs Umineko in a month or so.

I'll give another vote for Saikano. I might also recommend Serial Experiments Lain, it's an old series and I don't remember much but it was a bit of a mindfuck.

Also, Monster if you want a psychological thriller type of series.

This was also a dark anime. I love it!

This topic is kind of borderline between "discussion" and "recommendation."  I'll take your word that you want to discuss it, but the way you phrased the question sort of leads to using the Search function here in the Recommendations forum.  Anyway, take a walk through these past topics for a bunch of titles, and there is a good bit of discussion mixed in on most of these, too:

» Discussion Forums » Recommendations, Suggestions & Identification »

» Bringing a friend to the darkside, Dark anime for a newcommer
» looking for something to mess with my mind
» 18+ adult anime (not hentai) and mind f*ck
» Anime so depressing its soul shattering (sad/tragic/desturbing/dark)
» In need of emotional overkill!

» Mystery/suspense/horror/supernatural anime series with good musical tracks

  » Anime with a secret

  » Cyberpunk/Post Apocalyptic
» Cyberpunk / Steampunk Anime Recommendation Engine 1.4

Those topics have been inactive for "a short time" to "a while," so a couple newer anime might be missed.  One that comes to mind is Another, which I found disappointing at the end, but over all is an excellent & creepy ghost story in many ways.  Black★Rock Shooter, both OVA & TV but especially the TV series, is pretty dark, too.  Wasurenagumo, definitely.  Probably buried in those somewhere is Ghost Hound, which comes to my mind at the moment but might have been missed.  Belladonna of Sadness | Kanashimi no Belladonna is another quite Olde Schoole anime that stands out.

And, yeah, Legend of the Overfiend | UROTSUKIDOJI should have been the very first title in this topic.
I win, once again, in my never-ending struggle against victory.

When I hear the term "dark" I tend to think twisted and disturbing... and not among the norm. I've only come across a few that fit that.

Berserk (manga)
Gantz (manga)
Tokyo Akazukin (manga)
Mnemosyne (anime)
Speed Grapher (anime)

Out of those, the "darkest" would have to be Tokyo Akazukin, simply because of the loli factor. *shudders*

I haven't seen it yet but apparently Aoi Bungaku is pretty dark.
Umm, there's Monster which was suggested earlier, that shows very interesting lol..

Also check out Requiem for Phantom that show is pretty similar to darker than black.
Then there's Paranoia Agent :)

Hell Girl was somewhat dark but I loved it, and recently I found Deadman Wonderland to be darker.
