I watched many shows in my life, and I haven't had enough yet, i'm one of the veterans when it comes to anime and yet, even though I seen many seriously messed up shows, I'm not sure you can actually define 'DARK" in anime.

Many shows have one or more fatal momentum in their stories, for which we should be counting like HALF of the shows in fact, and there really IS NO PURE DARK anime out there, and the pure dark manga's are not being animated because they are too much to handle by stations, I mean, seriously, we would be watching black screen nearly all the time, no one would put up with that, and we already had that kind of treatment several times, with which the worst got received by Bakemonogatari in some episodes and Dead Man Wonderland also had plenty censoring.

Off the top of my head I would actually rank Higurashi as the most gruel and darkest when it comes to evil and dark mystery and fatal relations, however it being fragmented over several different arcs and several different realities, which was done perfectly and every other anime aiming to be this good will always fail because NOTHING can beat Higurashi's style. That show was simply perfect, i'm still hoping they will re-release season 1 and 2 on Blurays so I can splurge money on it :)

Second place would probably take Another, although it was done fairly hilariously from realistic point of view, and manga readers claim it was pretty damn butchered, it's still fairly gory and bloody and a lot of death warrants, with an enigmatic mystery behind it all.

Third place would be taken by Elfen Lied, although the manga was much better, the anime isn't any worse, it just swung a little differently, but the ending result was similarly well received, although the actual ending scene is shunned by manga fans. For obvious reasons.

Fourth place would land on Saikano, yes, you see it right, Saikano does have it's darkness but it's not actually all that dark when you think about it, the story is cruel indeed, but there isn't that much darkness in fact. Great story makes it an incredibly well designed show, and it would have sold like fresh buns if it was re-released on BluRays.

A lot of you will not likely agree with the fifth place, but I make my own list and you make your own.
Fifth place i'm willing to give to Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, while not being as dark as it would seem to be, it does have it fatal momentum more than once, and the ending delivers a pretty tragic truth.

Following in the same pattern i'd give a branch of 5.1-5.5 places to some otehr Anime Movies that also quallify to this pattern, like Grave of the Fireflies, Kuro and similar ones.

Sixth place would probably land on Highschool of the dead, although not entirely cruel and dark, it's pretty damn bloody and of course, it's probably one of the best zombie anime I have seen, even though the manga is so much better. The anime still rides the manga fairly well, with a few changes but nothing major if you didn't read the manga in the first place so you can actually enjoy the show. Although the show doesn't finish with the manga. I think it was half the manga that was animated.

If you also count some cruel story, but not entirely gory or bloody, I would also recommend Valkyria Chronicles and FSN/FSN UBW and Fate ZERO(currently airing) which have some dark stories and sad or cruel stories. For FSN you might want to consider playing the game first before watching anything though, ask Tatsujin for link via PM.

there is also a pretty damn messed up Mahou Shoujo Magica Madoka, although it's cruel but not all that dark, it's pretty good though. Not gory or bloody though.

And if you like to think a lot, watch Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt, even though you will laugh most of the time, the actual story behind those sisters is what's really dark, but I think the studio just trolled us by making only season 1 and not even considering doing season 2 at all, damned teasers, and S2 would probably delve deep into the sisters history. Oh well, HATE YOU!

As I have said, there is really no PURE Dark anime out there, technically, some Hentai Anime's are far darker than most normal anime get. If you want to be entertained by pure dark stories then stay with manga's as like I said, those will never get animated.

I could probably name a lot more but those that have been also mentioned in this thread are a good choice as well, what I listed is my top list in this regard.

Shigurui and Cossette no Shouzou are quite dark. Darker than most of the relatively mainstream titles mentioned here anyway.

This topic is kind of borderline between "discussion" and "recommendation."  I'll take your word that you want to discuss it, but the way you phrased the question sort of leads to using the Search function here in the Recommendations forum.  Anyway, take a walk through these past topics for a bunch of titles, and there is a good bit of discussion mixed in on most of these, too:

» Discussion Forums » Recommendations, Suggestions & Identification »

» Bringing a friend to the darkside, Dark anime for a newcommer
» looking for something to mess with my mind
» 18+ adult anime (not hentai) and mind f*ck
» Anime so depressing its soul shattering (sad/tragic/desturbing/dark)
» In need of emotional overkill!

» Mystery/suspense/horror/supernatural anime series with good musical tracks

  » Anime with a secret

  » Cyberpunk/Post Apocalyptic
» Cyberpunk / Steampunk Anime Recommendation Engine 1.4

Those topics have been inactive for "a short time" to "a while," so a couple newer anime might be missed.  One that comes to mind is Another, which I found disappointing at the end, but over all is an excellent & creepy ghost story in many ways.  Black★Rock Shooter, both OVA & TV but especially the TV series, is pretty dark, too.  Wasurenagumo, definitely.  Probably buried in those somewhere is Ghost Hound, which comes to my mind at the moment but might have been missed.  Belladonna of Sadness | Kanashimi no Belladonna is another quite Olde Schoole anime that stands out.

And, yeah, Legend of the Overfiend | UROTSUKIDOJI should have been the very first title in this topic.

Nice conglomeration of posts, thank you!

I'd like to second Berserk, though to finish it you would have to get the manga, since the anime cuts short (for now).
Basilisk has some dark moments, but I'd call it more of a tragedy than anything.

Serial Experiements Lain/Haibane Renmei

The latter may seem an odd choice I know. But having watched it many times (and considering it amongst my favourite series) there is a real undercurrent of darkness in that Anime that really puts me on edge far more than any bloodbath could.

Yes to Aoi Bungaku, Speed Grapher, Ghost Hound, and Requiem for the Phantom (apart from many other already named).

Himitsu and Mouryou no Hako I'd also consider dark. And Shiki.

School Days ^_^

I'm a little surprised it took that long to be mentioned as well. I can understand why people think Higurashi is pretty dark, but my feelings are that it has to have a dark story with a dark conclusion. Higurashi was pretty much an initially dark story with a happy ending. School Days started off pretty mild, but by episode 3 you were well on your way to "oh man, crazy shit is gonna happen in this series."

Nice boat.

I seem to recall Ergo Proxy being pretty dark, but it's been awhile since I've seen it so I don't remember exactly how it goes. I'd throw my hat in with Shadow Star Narutaru. It was deceptively dark, especially near the end. The story was flawed, but it was easy enough to mentally fill in the gaps where you could assume why the characters acted the way they did (molestation, insanity, etc...).

Darker than Black?

Ah, that was a great pun  ;D
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

Now and Then, Here and There.

More disturbing than any other anime I've seen, because it doesn't just use a grimdark setting or themes as some. Now and Then, Here and There genuinely tries to present a world distilling all the fucked up things humans have done and are doing now until you want to cry in despair. It's worse than hentai sadism, because none of that is in earnest, mere wish fulfillment for the id. This is like Grave of the Fireflies without the humanity.

Every atrocity you'd rather not think about to keep yourself happy and sane, this has it.

Elfen Lied tends to be the most gruesome shit you've seen when you watch it for the first time, but then you look back on it after watching more shows and laugh at the over-exaggeration of most of the scenes. Or maybe that's just me.

+1 for Now and Then, Here and There.
