And PS1 Tactics Ogre was especially hard on chaos route.

None of what you mentioned. I didn't mention it was "buggy" either. The skills were broken, as in a lot of them were stupid/useless in most or many situations. Also, having one of the famous classes go around and smash shit to pieces just like that was overpowered, too. Only monsters with big titles and nice affixes would go toe to toe with those knights. Tactics Ogre:LUCT had a better design for the battle system. You had those nice rare classes, but still required a source of energy to use to unleash ranged skills. I also liked the design on abilities.

I have no idea why they turned a reasonably mature gaming experience such as Final Fantasy Tactics -- both in terms of story and difficulty level -- into the childish sequels. They could have just smoothed out the gameplay core issues, added some classes, and then spent the remaining bulk of the expenses on writing a new story and dialogue. The thing about TBS, you don't need top-of-the-line graphics to enhance the experience and the controls are very basic as well. It gives you plenty of room to be creative.
I loved FFT, I would have to to commit to the hours needed to get anywhere. However, at this point I would rather play Disgaea, or any TBS game from NIS. I'm too used to the more flexible game design by now.

Makes me wonder too. FFT2 was crap compared to the first game. And like you said, you don't need those awesome graphics for tactics games. Keep them 2D with nice looking art. Just give us some good characters, story and gameplay.

I had the same qualms with FFTA. The first battle in the original Tactics was an epic moment with enemies attacking a chapel in a storm and kidnapping the princess you're hired to protect. You're drawn to find out more of the story when your friend (Delita) suddenly turns enemy.
The first battle in Tactics Advance was a snowball fight. That set the tone for the rest of the game: childlike, almost storybook in nature. That's what they were going for, too, but it was a strange departure from a sturdy foundation. Maybe they didn't think that a "mature" game made sense on a GameBoy Advance at the time. Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis proved that wrong though a year prior (using what looks like the same game engine, for the record). So, I dunno. It's regrettable.
It's choices like that which make me question the competency of S-E, and whether they can even deliver on XV.
