They could have just smoothed out the gameplay core issues, added some classes, and then spent the remaining bulk of the expenses on writing a new story and dialogue. The thing about TBS, you don't need top-of-the-line graphics to enhance the experience and the controls are very basic as well. It gives you plenty of room to be creative.

I loved FFT, I would have to to commit to the hours needed to get anywhere. However, at this point I would rather play Disgaea, or any TBS game from NIS. I'm too used to the more flexible game design by now.

Makes me wonder too. FFT2 was crap compared to the first game. And like you said, you don't need those awesome graphics for tactics games. Keep them 2D with nice looking art. Just give us some good characters, story and gameplay.

I had the same qualms with FFTA.  The first battle in the original Tactics was an epic moment with enemies attacking a chapel in a storm and kidnapping the princess you're hired to protect.  You're drawn to find out more of the story when your friend (Delita) suddenly turns enemy.

The first battle in Tactics Advance was a snowball fight.  That set the tone for the rest of the game: childlike, almost storybook in nature.  That's what they were going for, too, but it was a strange departure from a sturdy foundation.  Maybe they didn't think that a "mature" game made sense on a GameBoy Advance at the time.  Tactics Ogre: The Knight of Lodis proved that wrong though a year prior (using what looks like the same game engine, for the record).  So, I dunno.  It's regrettable.

It's choices like that which make me question the competency of S-E, and whether they can even deliver on XV.

Keep in mind that Square Soft was making those epic games ... before Enix merged with them and games started to pale after IX. Questioning XV is ... well, graphics and music should be pretty good. Everything else is a mystery ... ;/ ...

I thought after X we all realized we were just paying for a brand not necessarily the guarantee of a good story. Square will always deliver the music and the visuals but for everything else you're gambling on it.

Havoc10K:
First of all, the age of GREAT FF games is over, battle system will go the versus mode tracks, which means, FF will only be in name only, technically, ever since FF9 and maybe X-2 as far as battle system goes it feels completely wrong in combat. FFXI was an online game and was popular because it was an online FF game that was done pretty much right. FFXII was a copy>paste of XI with some new elements and new mechanics to make it feel right for single player game and that's it. Everything afterwards could have very well be released as NOT FF games, just like blizzards Diablo 3 that only has the Diablo name and the few characters names of which one should be already long dead (WTF Cain?) and nothing to it, not to mention the fucked up piracy solution of having an SP/MP game being treated as an all out MMO game giving people the client and having something of an online shop.

If FF XV will not return to the turn based system that was in FF games since the god damn beginning for 10 games which made Square what it is today and then they just toss it out the window for the next games, then this game is another fluke. Stop supporting fakes please. The only real advantage this seems to be is no longer shitbox 360 which means that the game will actually go full HD.

The reason why you don't hear anything new about versus is probably because of these 2 reasons:
1-Versus became XV
2-Versus is either on hold or cancelled.

Square has entered the market now for the money, not to fulfill fans desires to play a complete long journey to save the world for god knows which time already.

*goes back to play FFT and FF7 cuz those are the last games that really matter in FF franchisee*

Open your eyes people, you get candy that tastes bad.
