It was probably more the poor decisions, like following up so quickly on each console system (32x to Saturn to Dreamcast) than the Dreamcast itself.

Regardless, the PS2 dominated that generation. The Wii was definitely a rebound, but it's success is almost entirely from bundled and other first party games. They'll definitely have to do more to succeed with the Wii U.

That said, they totally dominate the portable market. And the Wii, for all it's poor retention rates, still has clear and away the greatest hardware sales. I dunno if I'd tout the Gamecube as a great system merely for not killing off Nintendo, but I wouldn't bet on the Wii U being a swan song for their home console division either.
