Do They Really Not Make Them Like They Used To?
SirSkyRider:
While it is true that some series (Atelier e.g., though I still kind of dig the Arland games) haven't produced a brilliant game and a few new series are simply crap (Compile Hearts, your turn), some series (e.g. Disgaea or MegaTen) or studios (especially Falcom) managed to at least maintain their level and some new jRPGs (Dark/Demon's Souls or Nier) turned out pretty good. Japan might not be as creative as they used to be, but jRPGs are in my opinion nowhere near hitting rock bottom.
I won't speak for wRPGs, but I've recently found some titels that hooked me up with the genre again after the last wRPG I played was Jade Empire.
@surdumil: Try Daedelic's games, they're jolly good p'n'c-adventures.

Well tru, they are not hitting the rock bottom, but I think that the initial post is just saying that the new games aren't as good as the old ones.
and they do repeat ideas.

This. And then there's also nostagia clouding our opinions. Recently beat Legend of Dragoon and while it was a joy to finally beat, it sure wasn't deserving of more than 7/10. Obviously a very inferior game to the Final Fantasy PSX era.

I don't have a problem with that. If something is good as it is, try not too hard to change it, because you might end up ruining it completely.
For me, I buy games based on an initial impulse when seeing a few screenshots or a short video that make me say: "Yes, I want this", something that happens mostly with jRPGs. If that doesn't happen, I don't care how good another game may be - if I don't get that "good vibration", I cannot enjoy it.

^ exactly, they fear to try out new things. and I don't have any problem with either, but that makes the games rather predictabale :P so you buy the games mostly based on characters
