^ It's all about matching the screen dimensions with aspect ratio of the anime.

1920x1080p best for anime, 1920x1200 best for movies to have that black boarder feel to it. and in art works tho... i'd say anything that gives you more overall pixel is better, simply put you'd see more area without scrolling all over the image =P

Damn after all this I know god damn well what I want. I'll see what the best laptop is a year from now, when the either the gen 4 comes out, or the gen 3 drop in price.

Looking at the Sony S Series, the XPS15z (if they drop their prices dramatically), and the HP Envy 15 ((if HP fixes the problem with its screen, (reds displayed as orange)).

Most likely I'll end up getting a Sony S Series since they have an extra slice battery that adds a crap load of battery life, it has manual graphics card switching without having to reboot, and everything else I want. 1299$ at the config I want, hopefully prices go down. I'll still get it if the price stays the same.

Nope. I so wish I could get my hands on a machine that wasn't a decade old and had a 4:3 screen.

Black borders are kinda redundant when the monitor itself black bordered.

nao, have you ever saw a movie run at 1920x(>)1080p? i mean 1920x900 for example, where the top and bottom part is filled with black lines, it feels more movie like that way.

I see what you are saying and I agree, but I think a monitor looks its best when viewing a source that is equivalent to the native resolution, in terms of quality. I do agree that the black bars seem cinematic, however I wouldn't want huge black bars. Just a tad bit, because watching Hidan No Aria in 720P on my 768P looks kinda different. None the less making the screen seem bigger, but different.

thats why 1920x1080p looks best with animes, and 1920x1200 looks best with movies.

Stop messing with microscopic monitors, get a 46" LCD LED tv to act as your monitor. Problem solved :)

Erm... TV? Correct if I'm wrong (don't have a TV for ages now), but don't TVs have only 1920x1080 resolution?

I mean 1920x1080 on a 46"? That's just ridiculously lame. I'd rather get 30" with 2560x1600.

When there is no content in that high resolution you will get a worse image quality, than playing a 1080p video on a 1080p screen. Try watching a 480p video on a 1080p screen and you will see what I mean.

^with madvr and the right upscale algorithm it looks great, although kinda blurred. and [480p -> 1080p] isnt the right comparison, it should be [720p -> 1080p] vs [1080p -> 1440p]

I was saying 480p, because it would be easier to see what I meant, and because there are still a lot of content only in 480p so he is going to experience it. And no it doesn't look great even if you use madvr it just doesn't look as bad, but still pretty bad if the content has a lot of details.

with the right algorithm you see less artifacts due to scaling imho, so that means upscaling could look more clean in exchange for looking slightly blurred.

480p is plain horrible, who gets those anyway ._.

I think it is about time someone tells you that there aren't a BD or HDTV release for everything.

Sure you can use something like SoftCubic, but a lot of details will be lost and it doesn't look sharp. It is pretty good for "western cartoon" since they often don't have much details, but with anime I would almost never use it.

Yeah as for my main TV monitor I want to stick with 1080P and not retina because most movies and animes top out at that resolution.

P.S. This laptop is for pre-order, and its freaking amazing.
