Yay or Nay? The Windows 8 Metro Interface
« on: July 04, 2012, 09:52:11 AM »
I'm sure almost everyone of us has heard of Windows 8 by now, and that new Metro interface that Microsoft is doing for it.

Personally, I think this interface is too touch oriented. It is really really quite jarring to use with a traditional desktop setup.. I have only tried it out for a few days and I already find it hard to like it...

For one, multitasking with the new interface is practically impossible. There is no way to open 2 apps at once. You must be in the traditional desktop mode to do that.. Oh, and the start button is gone  :'( Furthermore, some apps behave completely differently on the two different modes!

I wish that this metro interface was only for touch devices..

Enough of my rant.  :-\ What do you guys think?

It's quite clear that they had tablets and phones in mind when it was designed. They probably only released a Desktop version "because we can."

It may be nice for touchscreens but for desktop use with
mouse and keyboard I find Metro horrible. I don't want a lot
of flashy stuff from the OS I want it from the programs
that I actually use.

I'm quite confident that the metro ui can be disabled, since if there's no option for that Micro$oft is just driving people to use OS X or Linux. For touch devices the metro ui is the best I've used so far, far better than iOS or that Android which sucks ass.

I agree that the interface is awesome for phones. Too bad they don't have the market share which results in less apps :/

Hope they give us a full conventional desktop. For now, the first screen you see when you boot your windows 8 is that metro UI. And they have no more start button also -_-

Been using windows 8 consumer preview for roughly two months now. My opinion? I'm not buying the 15$ upgrade disk, I'll be skipping this generation like quite a few people skipped vista.

Now, if I had a laptop with a touchscreen, then I'd be all for it. But as it is now, it just feels slower. Pressing a button is damn faster than pointing a mouse somewhere and waiting for the button to be pressed to emerge.

Having said that, I like the new locked screen look, but that's about it.

I think that for desktop users Win8 is completely irrelevant. At least I haven't seen any important changes like new DX or any other significant "under the hood" improvements.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

I would consider faster start up time, an "under the hood" improvement.

The new metro interface really is horrible on desktop, and it have added extra step for tasks that normal was fast and simple, like searching and turning of your computer. At the moment you can't turn of the metro UI and if it stays the same for the final version, I will have no desire to upgrade from win7.

I really like the interface, but as it has already been said: multitasking is quite difficult. I havent been able to get used to it enough yet to committ to making it my main OS, and I do have a touchscreen desktop. If I do decide to buy it, $15 is the moat I would spend. This will be the first Windows release since XP that I wont be able to get free from MSDNAA.

Who really cares about start up time. Once its running, that's what matters. As for multitasking, Windows, in general, is weak in this area already, they didn't need to make it worse.

There are people who actually turn off their computers?
* Duki is shocked.

Feel the same as everyone else, it's too much tablet/touch screen oriented. I do like the improved task manager tho.
I think I'll be sticking with Win7 and skipping this version.

I shut my computer off to save power and because the blue lights would keep me up at night. Additionally, leaving you computer on adds wear to it, and I'd rather deal with some minor inconvenience then a major (and costly) one.

I thought leaving a machine on for too long would overheat it eventually if the room is not well-ventilated.

Well, sure, but that would be an extreme case. The walls would have to have very thick isolation and there would have to be a complete absence of airflow out of (and presumably into) the room.

In that case, the overheated computer would probably be your least concern if you were in there with it.

I'll probably skip 8, too. Of course I'm one of two people on Earth still running Vista, so what do I know?

a)Windows suck

b)Windows phone is an abomination. People who use it instead of Android are ignoramuses at best and retards retards at worst. Luck is on our side with smartphones because a linux distribution has managed to take over the market and yet you would want to give  Microsoft a hold on it? Are you fucking crazy!

c)I hope Windows 8 sucks so bad that people will start switching for Ubuntu.

Dunno about better, but buying a new laptop would be ~100$ cheaper. So I'm not too against it.
