You don't just "get" viruses (anymore). You have to download something that's infected. If you're careful, you won't get infected. You don't really even need an antivirus, it's just a handy extra.

Okay I don't get it. Please explain what's the fuss all about?.. Clearly states - turning it on sends information about apps.. Something akin to "help improve experience" in Windows 7, Office and Visual Studio..

Seems like a truckload of FUD from Linux zealots.

@Pagonis: Basically, it sends the name of the file along with a hash (which uniquely identifies that executable file) to Microsoft, who then check it, and if it's on their list of known malware, Windows block it from running. The concern is that Microsoft can use this to identify what applications you've been running. Which, IMO, is relatively unlikely, but who knows.

The bigger concern though, as that Ars article pointed out, is that every single Metro app HAS to be installed via the Windows store. So, in other words, every program that makes any use of the new Windows 8 features, has to be downloaded straight from Microsoft anyway. Who can then link that data to, at the least an email address, and potentially a name and billing information too. Which is a ridiculously massively huge issue to begin with anyway (with potential legal issues - as MS already know from internet explorer), but even setting that aside, the privacy risk makes that silly little optional smartscreen thing pale in comparison.

They clearly state - information about apps might (=absolutely will) get sent if you do not TURN it OFF. And then here comes pro Linux and pro Apple fans - "OOOH THAT SLEAZY MS SNEAKING SPYWARE... MS will probably turn around and modify or revoke most of the features that are going to make this a failure as a desktop OS in their next Windows OS. It'll be the new Vista. There really is no reason to bitch about it. 7 is a fine OS as far as Windows goes, people just won't switch. It happened with Vista it will happen with 8.

the only OSes that really worked well were windows98, windowsXP and windows7, all those inbetweens like windows2000 and windows vista had too much issues with them that made people stick with their current OSes during their time. the same thing seems to be happening with windows8, indeed.

Windows 98? Are you kidding me? It wasn't even decent until SE came out.

All of the non-NT Windows before 2000 sucked. Windows 2000 is based off of NT, which is why it was pretty good.

Don't mix up 2000 and ME. 2000 was a good build, ME was Microsoft's worst mistake.

windows98 was decent at the years around 1998 to 2000, once win2000 game out win98's users got split in two. so yes win98 was decent on it's year bracket.

i forgot about win2000 because xp came out too fast.

edit: the time win2000 came out i didnt have the necessary budget to buy one, but by the time winxp came out i had replaced my pentium2 for a pentium4 =O so, pfft win2000 you out of luck.

Meh.. Win 8 looks bad! Why the hell is Microsoft downgrading their OS from a desktop oriented one to a tablet oriented one ffs. I definitely won't be using this. Then again, the last Windows I used was XP, which I still feel was the best thing that came out of Microsoft's stable. Windows 7 would be ok imo, but I would rather my games and apps used my Graphics card instead of my OS[But it was atleast less of a humongous blunder that Vista was.]

I still don't get all the fuss they made about being more security enhanced in Win 7 though. Never got anything in XP and I never paid for anything either. A combination of Avira and Comodo[both freeware] mostly did the trick for me.

That being said however, I'm just wondering what to go with when I get a new Desktop. Linux would be my obvious choice, but I hate the lag that Wine/VirtualBox produces while playing games for me.
