Old PC Parts

GoGeTa006:
So, as my "savings" grow (to buy a new PC) I keep looking at my baby and I keep thinking:
I will most likely keep the PSU (600W) the Case and the HDs, maybe one optical drive that still runs on IDE. . .
but what do I do with the mobo, the vid card, the RAM. . . ??

I was also thinking, maybe ill keep the whole thing, just take out the hard drives (leave the IDE one), and have another PC to install linux. . .but I really doubt I'll use it much. . .It will most likely collect dust. . .

so should I sell it? but TBH no one is gonna buy it. . .its old

so. . .what do YOU do with your old PC's? (or PC components)

Soryon:
I just leave them alone mostly and build a whole new computer. This has led to me having like a dozen computers. More then I have rooms in the house. Occasionally I will give one away to a friend or family member. I also have a closet filled with computer parts from around the late 90s to previous.

.
Specifications, please.  Include model and speeds.  If the system is still running, use SIW or something like it to perform an in-depth hardware profile.

CPU:
GPU:
RAM:
NIC:
OTHER misc. parts, like add-in cards:

Then, what might you want to do with it?  Learning linux is one good option.

Build a NAS ..?
2ndary media player ..?
2ndary web-surf & email ..?
Dedicated ("headless") torrent server ..?
Killer firewall/security for your internets ..?

Need to evaluate tradeoffs, such as system capability/resources/power and amount of electricity/heat used/generated for what service(s) it could provide.

If you need the case, you should be able to repurpose a really old useless one that you can obtain free somehow.  For a PSU, depending on what you attempt, you may be able to get by with a 250 or 300 Watt.

Pentium100:
I am a packrat, so I keep the old parts. They can be useful sometimes (I needed 4 additional PCs for doing my thesis for the university and I managed to pretty much build them out of my old parts/PCs). Also, having spare parts is useful when troubleshooting a PC for a friend (some bring PCs that are quite old, so my parts fit).

vuzedome:
Keep them hanging around, I'll always be able to find a use for them.
