I've never tried AKG, but Sennheiser is pretty legit.

I was able to try the Beats by dre (the pro and the studio), they sound marvelous, beautiful but TBH they're overpriced

First of all:

what do you want them for (primarily)?
- Gaming? (look for nice bass)
- Music? (look for nice balance)
- Anime? (iono. . .)
- Movies? (Bass again)

Personally I've used Yamaha headphones and they sound very very very good for gaming and music, Jizz in my pants with Rachmaninoff's Piano concerto

I dislike the 598's beige. Go with the AKG's.

And, music does not answer the question. What "genres" of music do you listen to? There is a big ass difference between phones for listening to dubstep and say Mozart.

Why are you even comparing the K701 with the HD598? K701 is definitely better, but that's subjected to your own personal preference.
Just make sure you try them fist.

K701 within 300 dollars? Goly!! How did you get such a deal?
I'd ask you to get me a pair as well and have it shipped all the way here, I'll even pay you for the hassle.
I don't live in North America but shops that sell such audio gears usually would allow you to try them out.

Sony MDR-v900hd

I picked up a pair online back in mid-2008 for $140 delivered.  Shop around and see what best price you can get on them today.  They're pretty stunning.  I wore them for 6-12 hours per day until last summer, used them for live mixing & recording in clubs and to post-process 4- and 8-channel 24-bit/192 Hz files for publication.  Now I only wear them a few hours per week since I have decent speakers for general use on my computer.  Still put these on if I do any serious mixing/editing ... I just don't do any of that work anymore.  They have held up very well all these years.  Some of the ultra-thin vinyl has worn off the headband, but they still sound pretty cherry.

Of course, the tech has improved since then, but look at the specifications on these and use them as a standard.  You'll have to have hearing like a cat to appreciate anything with higher specs.  Look for next gen models that followed the MDR-v900HD if you really want something that's supposed to be better.  That "HD" on the end of the model number is for High Definition, and Sony takes it seriously.  I had the MDR-v300HD before I got the 900; those were in service for me from ~1997 through 2010 when I left them in a recording studio in Latvia ... where they are still in use as a pro gear back-up set.

Most of the $200 and up headphones are designed to separate you from your money, not provide you with a better experience.  True pro gear starts above $400, and you will require gifted ears like only a few thousand humans have to be able to put it to use.

I had some Sennheiser earplugs, and they are pretty bad (design, comfort and quality wise), but their headphones are probably better. If you can get K701 within a 300$ price range, I think I would go for them.
If you find out you can't I would suggest ath m50, I have one and it does extremely well in playing a wide area of different type of genre. The Sony MDR-v900hd suggested by datora is also good, but I thought they felt and looked a bit cheap in my opinion.

Don't bother with beats, they alter the music to boost bass, which just degrade most music except for hiphop. I was glad I borrowed a pair from a friend else i might have bought a pair, since they look quite good design wise :S

@datora
What kind of speaker are you using?

"Decent" is pretty open to interpretation, but:

 • Creative GigaWorks T40 Series II

If I may qualify that a bit (given the topic was not supposed to be speakers, I glossed that very thinly) ...

For what they are, they are "OKay" to "decent."  I would not recommend these for audiophile use, but you still get decent performance/sound out of them as desktop speakers.  For the circumstances I use them, they are "good enough," and part of those circumstances are that if I require some pro-range audio definition, I can always slap those Sony MDR-V900HDs on that I listed above.

These T-40s are a bit muddy and (without a subwoofer) cannot achieve rich bass, although it's not entirely shabby.  The mids & highs are reasonably clear without being perfectly crisp.  There are some other design flaws.  Check the feedback at that newegg link for 4/12/2012 by "nearPhilly" and you'll see just about everything I could mention.  I'd probably give these three eggs rather than two and give that review a +1 for just about every point.  The caution on the headphone pass-throuigh is an important and very disappointing flaw; it's completely useless.

What they do have going for them is that they are desktop speakers, which don't need to play loud so much as "clean" because I sit so close to them.  Although slightly tall, their footprints are fairly normal so you conserve desktop real estate.  The connecting cord is sucks short, though ... making it impossible to span a dual monitor setup.  They barely work for me because one of my monitors is a 19" 3:4 while the other is 21.5" widescreen ... they barely fit on either side of this setup with no more than an inch of extra cord.  That's a God-damned fucking stupid design flaw.

The other positive is that I picked mine up for $89.99 delivered on a Shell Shocker between Thanksgiving & Christmas last fall, when they were normally going for $150-ish.  At $90, I could wish they were a little bit cheaper.  I used to have much better Aiwa speakers I got for about $50 back in ~1995 ... but those are gone and today's economy has made deals like that disappear.

So, a weak recommend for cheap but "decent" desktop speakers for sub-audiophile but acceptable sound to watch anime & movies & youtube.  But, when I want to put on particularly tasty music, I jack in the headphones.

I also have a Logitech Z305 Clip-On USB Laptop Speaker bar that isn't doing anything.  Got one on a stock liquidation sale at the local Target for $15.99.  I had hoped they would get me by, but they didn't and that's why I then got the Creative T-40s.

However, I've been trying to figure out how to power the Z305 (MUST use a USB cable) without using the USB as the sound feed ... which these do automatically and bypass the analogue output of my audio card.  IF I can solve that problem, then I'd like to use my analogue center channel jack on my audio card to feed the Z305 as a center channel while using the T-40s for front right-left stereo channels.  Then I'd have a 2 + 1 sound configuration which I suspect would be more than adequate for a desktop.

I think what I need to do is sacrifice a USB cable where I can identify & cut the data feeds while keeping the power feeds.  Then, the center channel analogue off my soundcard needs a conversion jack so the stereo Z305 bar can push the mono center channel out both its left & right speakers.

In theory, that should be a pretty rich 2 + 1 config.  Just one of many hardware hacks on my "to-do" list once I cross off a few other emergencies first ...

gaming is split in two types of sound, micro details(FPS) and bass(RTS/RPG).
also for animes and such its good to have headphones with high spl/mV, good enough micro-details, and really good vocal presentation, because you wouldn't be needing to turn up the volume high to get to hear them, specially understanding dialogues.

@OP
btw check out superlux, im using HD668B and its pretty neat, for a 35$ headphone that is.
(click to show/hide)

i'd suggest:
HD668B for FPS - superlux HD668B
HD440 or HD330 for all around - superlux HD440 & superlux HD330
HD660 for music - superlux HD660

PS: since convincing buyers is too hard, try researching it yourself, google "superlux HD668B" etc. and read through Head-fi.org's reviews.

@datora
Damn that would be a downgrade from the z623 I have at the moment, but thanks for replaying :)

Sennheisers are fairly decent for what they are, but the obscene prices (for any phones, generally) don't really go well outside US.

AKG's, but only slightly better, and that's just my opinion.

I think most people will go for the HD598 instead after trying them out, but I'd still get the K701 because it looks that much more attractive.

I think i might go with the hd 598 since it seems its more practical for outdoor use but the only problem is the 3m cable
I do see that the cable cable is detachable but i wasnt able to find one that is shorter
Can any1 find me a cable for the hd 598 thats 3-5 feet and perferably has a 3.5 mm plug end?

btw miku-tan is awesome<3

^ there should be some near your place that sells headphones, it shouldn't go over 5$ for a 1meter cable. CD-R king should have some also, and no its a cable so it shouldn't be a crappy shit even if its CD-R king.
