AKG K 701 vs Sennheiser HD 598

vuzedome:
Why are you even comparing the K701 with the HD598? K701 is definitely better, but that's subjected to your own personal preference.
Just make sure you try them fist.

They are both within my price range of 300 and where would i be able to try these on btw i live in nyc but im moving to boston soon

vuzedome:
K701 within 300 dollars? Goly!! How did you get such a deal?
I'd ask you to get me a pair as well and have it shipped all the way here, I'll even pay you for the hassle.
I don't live in North America but shops that sell such audio gears usually would allow you to try them out.

Sony MDR-v900hd

I picked up a pair online back in mid-2008 for $140 delivered.  Shop around and see what best price you can get on them today.  They're pretty stunning.  I wore them for 6-12 hours per day until last summer, used them for live mixing & recording in clubs and to post-process 4- and 8-channel 24-bit/192 Hz files for publication.  Now I only wear them a few hours per week since I have decent speakers for general use on my computer.  Still put these on if I do any serious mixing/editing ... I just don't do any of that work anymore.  They have held up very well all these years.  Some of the ultra-thin vinyl has worn off the headband, but they still sound pretty cherry.

Of course, the tech has improved since then, but look at the specifications on these and use them as a standard.  You'll have to have hearing like a cat to appreciate anything with higher specs.  Look for next gen models that followed the MDR-v900HD if you really want something that's supposed to be better.  That "HD" on the end of the model number is for High Definition, and Sony takes it seriously.  I had the MDR-v300HD before I got the 900; those were in service for me from ~1997 through 2010 when I left them in a recording studio in Latvia ... where they are still in use as a pro gear back-up set.

Most of the $200 and up headphones are designed to separate you from your money, not provide you with a better experience.  True pro gear starts above $400, and you will require gifted ears like only a few thousand humans have to be able to put it to use.

I had some Sennheiser earplugs, and they are pretty bad (design, comfort and quality wise), but their headphones are probably better. If you can get K701 within a 300$ price range, I think I would go for them.
If you find out you can't I would suggest ath m50, I have one and it does extremely well in playing a wide area of different type of genre. The Sony MDR-v900hd suggested by datora is also good, but I thought they felt and looked a bit cheap in my opinion.

Don't bother with beats, they alter the music to boost bass, which just degrade most music except for hiphop. I was glad I borrowed a pair from a friend else i might have bought a pair, since they look quite good design wise :S

@datora
What kind of speaker are you using?
