Saw this and I wanted to recommend few things - Don't purchase the WD Notebooks for externals, get the WD Elements since they're reliable and durable. They are slower than the notebooks but they'll last you very long. As for internals, get the Blue or better yet the Black edition for WD. As for Seagate, the new series they've been coming out with are reliable to what I'm researching. Anything older than that is not worth your money.

How is WD My Book Essentials series? The WD Elements you mentioned is max. available in 1TB which comes nowhere near my requirement... my requirement is atleast 3TB
What is the new series that Seagate is bringing out? i currently have Seagate FreeAgent GoFlex Desk.. how is this?

I have a 1.5TB (I should have also gotten a discounted 2TB, but didn't have the $$ handy that day), which was approximately at least a year ago. I guess they added more capacity since then.

I have no idea about that though. But this is only USB 2.0... the other one which comes in USB 2.0 and 3.0 is upto 1TB only...
I want a USB 3.0 also along with 2.0
i may not have a USB 3.0 laptop but that doesn't mean that i won't buy one in future...

USB 3.0-- that would explain the 1TB confusion.
Unless you really need to transfer huge files faster all the time (more than a GB in ~0.5 minutes), I usually assume 2.0 would suffice.

so what do you say about WD my book essentials?... how good is it?
I guess this is the only one available here... haven't yet inquired about Elements though.

There is a 3TB one in Newegg, I saw it two weeks ago and it's for like ... 170ish dollars (maybe less?). The 2TB is about 120ish USD. Avoid all external WD's with the exception of the Elements series. The Elements series does look very simple with the casing, but it's a lot more durable and reliable than all other external series out there by WD. I'm giving you this from experience - and it wasn't a pleasant one.

As for the Elements, leave it in an open area. Putting a blowing fan from the side of it would help to cool it down when you're watching videos off of it (I watch anime off of mine, a lot!).

If you want to go with another External device, get Hatchi (was it?). They're the second best brand on the market.

I never imagined rackmounts in general to be really reasonable for home use, actually. I always picture them stuffed in racks, stored in a large server room with several giant fans aimed at it, and with a floor that is tiled in a way that the tiles are removable (so you can easily run cables under the floor). It's mostly my University that gave me that picture, when I got to visit the server room a few times. I've basically described the room, except it has a shitload of other servers as well.

You could have checked the later posts as well...
The Elements you are saying is only available in USB 2.0 after 1TB...for 2-3TB it is only USB 2.0
i don't have a computer which is USB 3.0 enables but i would surely buy one in future
so i would certainly like a USB 3.0 device too

Yes its resonable the only heat you will get from it is the drives Almost all 4u cases come with 4x120mm fans right behind the drives to push air. I have a 20bay case and drives never see above 32c on the hottest of summer days and being we just hit 112f/44.4c. They are cheap and well made they might be on the ugly side but function well. There is no need for lots of cables its standard backplate on the back, power,mouse/keyboard/network/monitor/network cable, if you run headless you just have power and network cable.

Racks just make them pretty. Hard to see but this is how mine looks

Yup, just like my 4 WD My Book Essentials are all shit. Two of them died, the other two are still alive but I sure know they won't last very long. Also, this is based on not just my own products dying ... but research. Check out the reviews and specifications for these models. Even the newer version from WD are not reliable. Elements is the way to go for externals with WD. They look like shit, but they sure hella last long and much more reliable.

okay i agree you have experience with my book series.. so i'd go with elements... but i think my country only stocks what is in demand
should i order it from ebay or amazon if i want to? Are they reliable?

It seems like WD External 3TB is highly in demand. It's not on newegg any longer either as was mentioned earlier in this thread. You might wanna fall back on this. It's really cheap and I have 3 of those. I also have a 1.5 TB Elements. God I love all of them.

Also, for internal HDD's ... WD released a new series called RED. It's cheap, reliable and fast and it's excellent for RAID configurations. Here it is. I wanna get me a few of those!
