i do wonder though about how slower is the red in comparison to blues and blacks, feedback says its slightly faster than green.

Faster than green, slower than blue.

Black > Blue > Red > Green.

Well since no one was posting on this thread for a week or so i did a bit of a research in the local market for Western digital elements 3TB hard disk
it seems they do get it but at the moment they are out of stock....
not that i need it urgently

so i don't think i'll need to fall back on 2TB disks

Velociraptor is the fastest Western Digital hard disk i know of... it is labelled as an internal hard disk in the western digital Catalog i have with me. It's speed is 10000rpm IIRC.

How much research do you really need to do for an external, they're all fairly similar....?
Get one that has the best $ to gb ratio if you value your money.
Get one from a decent local pc store if you value your time.
Get one with more warranty if it'll be used more frequently.

And no, there arent any know deathstars on the market right now, unless there are still some 7200.11 floating around with old firmware.

Well i say i do agree with all three of your points but there is something more to it which can only be known by asking others who have used it before.
You can't decide how good a drive is just by going to the shop....like everyone here prefers Western Digital over Seagate
Max warranty i have seen for 3TB drives is 3 years... imo they should last more than that... warranty is no good in this case...

if you don't agree with it do your own research

Furthermore, it does matter on what you pick and it's your money to do whatever you want with it. Obviously you want the best bang for your buck but you want it to be reliable, durable and good performance ... yes? Then do some research and it doesn't hurt to ask people.

they said whenever i ask them for the 3TB elements they can arrange it within a week

How much? If it's less than 200 US dollars then go for the 3TB, if not then go for the 2 TB. The 2 TB is about 130 US dollars so that's a really good bang for everything you're looking for.

1 640BG (I forgot if it was caviar green or blue) and 2 caviar blue 2TB. I used those HDDs as extra storage space for animes.

Well i am getting my book essentials 3TB for less than $200 so elements is bound to be less than $200 since it is always cheaper even on the Western digital site. I'll confirm it anyways.

my WD my book essential 3tb just crashed today. might be recoverable, but i've only had it a year and its always had problems (like making my computer not start when it was plugged in on start up and just generally freezing up a lot) so i'll probably go for an elements one next, you guys seem to have done a lot of research. i just hope i can get the files back, gonna miss 2tb of straight anime if i cant :,(

And whats wrong with the advice I gave, thats pretty much the checklist you'd go through for buying an external, the one i missed out was 2.5 vs 3.5 for portability.

please tell me what more do need to research for an external

EDIT: and pricing for a 3tb should be around 150ish, 2tb are around 100ish. (usd)

Well my seagate does something like this to my laptop too...
I have windows 7 professional but sometimes it converts to basic when i connect my drive

Well as far the price goes i'd suggest that you look at the catalog of western digital
And it is decided... Elements only for me until i start earning

After that i'll probably a NAS unit
