The most realistic anime films?
« on: July 25, 2012, 07:38:26 PM »
Hello.
I'm searching for the most realistic anime films (whose plot is put in the 20th century and on - thus excluding samurai anime etc.) which means NO elements of science fiction, fantasy, mecha, wizards, magic, ghosts, anthropomorphism, etc.etc.
I'm interested only in films, NOT in series.

Some that I could think of (those in red are not subtitled):

Ghibli:
-Only Yesterday
-Whisper of the Heart
-From Up On Poppy Hill
-Ocean Waves
-Grave of the fireflies
-My neighbors the Yamadas

other:
-Byousoku 5 Centimeter
-Tokyo Godfathers
-Chie the Brat
-Diary of Anne Frank
-Furusato Japan
-Piano No Mori
-The Day the Earth moved
-5-tou ni Naritai
-Pattenrai!! Minami no Shima no Mizu Monogatari
-Momoko
-Dioxin no Natsu
-Κ-Οn Movie
-Mai mai Miracle
-Nasu: Summer in Andalusia

WWII:
-Barefoot Gen 1 & 2
-Who's Left Behind (Ushiro no Shoumen Daare)
-Rail of the Star
-Glass no Usagi
-Nagasaki 1945: Angelus no Kane
-Hiroshima ni Ichiban Densha ga Hashitta
-Kuroi Ame ni Utarete
-Kankara Sanshin
-Hi no Ame ga Furu
-Chocchan no Monogatari

Any other suggestions?

Glass no Usagi has HK English subs.
neo1024 translates Momoko subs from Russian to English. Hopefully, they will be available in a month or two.

I don't remember any fantastical elements in The Place Promised in Our Early Days or Millenium Actress, though the latter does skip around time frames.

Erm. Kind've drawing a blank on ones I've seen.

There are a few I have lined up for watching, but haven't gotten to yet: The Tibetan Dog, Lady Lady, A Wind Skimming the River's Surface, Rail of the Star, and Run Melos. The last is ancient Greece and Rail of the Star is WW2 era, but I dunno when the others take place yet (or if they fully meet your criteria). They look interesting anyway, so thought I'd mention them in case they do.

Not fantasy elements, but definitely sci-fi.

Thanks for your suggestions.

@Garret02
this has sci-fi or fantasy elements, doesn't it? I've seen it but I don't remember much..

@Al_Sleeper
What do you mean HK subtitles?
the only ones i've found are machine translated, and wasn't  able to download them either..
And i want to see this film very much!

@Triltaison
Yes, A Wind Skimming the River's surface fits the category, although it's an OVA. But it's very good.
And I'm still waiting for a better quality version of Rail of the Star, to watch it.

Oh, right... I watched it like five years ago so it's pretty fuzzy. I really don't remember much about it other than someone played a violin and a plane was involved. Maybe I should dust it off again, because I totally forgot about the sci-fi stuff and it's pretty major.

Welp, scratch it then.

HK subs are subs translated by Chinese translators.
Partially fixed subs for Glass no Usagi:

BTW, you can watch Dioxin no Natsu with auto-translated Russian subs. Its story is not too convoluted, therefore I doubt you'll have troubles understanding it.

well, I don't know any russian.
or do you mean to use the russian subtitles and auto-translate them in English?
Either way, I think I'd like to wait until someone releases it..

Any Russian guy here?

(by the way, I saw Glass no Usagi yesterday. it was good, thanks again for the subtitles. I wonder if the original DVD has this audio. It sounded like being on a radio or something, without any bass frequencies)

I've updated the first post with a more complete list (based on some suggestions from the others too)
