Erm, are webcomics not allowed?
« on: July 28, 2012, 07:14:51 AM »
So anyways, before uploading Ensemble I searched the wiki and the uploaders forum and didn't see anything about webcomics being prohibited or not.

Upon doing a wider search I see that 3 years ago in the manga section Kureshii said the following on the topic of webcomics...

As content for uploading to BakaBT, no, regardless of whether they're ostensibly considered manga or not. For the purposes of moderating uploaded content we apply a very conservative and traditional definition of manga, to avoid opening up a new can of worms we're not ready to deal with. This may or may not change in future.

But I kind of doubt this is still the case...I mean, we have anime that has only been webcast.  Why wouldn't we allow manga that has only been distributed digitally?  I should think the policy has expanded since then.  Certainly nobody thinks BBT has a "conservative" stance to manga anymore, the amount of manga has TRIPLED [expanded by ~2500 torrents] since Dec. of 09'.

When I tried to see if there was more web comics on BBT the only thing I could come up with was the Try Try Try, and that's the prequel to Yotsubato.

Considering that they ignored me about Netcomics, I hope they at least give you an answer...

Afuganisu-tan would be another example.

Afuganisu-tan would be another example.

In a similar vein, the Hetalia manga and webcomic don't appear to be on the blacklist. Since it started as a webcomic, it's at least another major example to be put in question for future uploads.

It should depend on what is defined as "manga" -- does any type of Japanese-produced, Japanese-published cartooning go, regardless of style/tradition, production language, etc? From Sazae-san and similar gag manga to mainstream shoujo and shounen to the Marvel Comics clone I bet someone in Japan has pooped out at some point?

Personally, I would suggest the following guidelines for webcomics:

It's okay if:
* it's created by a (Japanese) author who has had works published in print (in Japan etc.)
* or failing that, it's has been published on the Net or in print by a Japanese manga publishing establishment
before the darkness arrives

Just to note one other web comic that is on BBT (its even my own upload)
I honestly think that some should be allowed. We should place restrictions, ofc, but to allow none at all is just...

IIRC it was noted to have been a web-comic before it was approved, also. I could be wrong, it was a while ago. However, I think original comics by published authors should be allowed. I know its a fine line, but maybe we could have a special section for it or something? idk- but I would hate for some really good material pass by just because it doesnt fully match the rules. But hey, thats just me.
