I LOVE this show! I only discovered it last night when EveTaku posted this and this (which are superb btw, especially the first one - go and watch them), but I'm already 4 episodes in and really enjoying it. It's probably the most Japanese show I've ever seen, and it's clearly pretty much impossible to translate, but that's exactly the kind of anime I love the most. I've always thought the best way to learn about a culture is through its humour, and this demonstrates that nicely.

So glad somebody decided to sub it, even though it probably does have limited appeal to most non-Japanese. It's a really great show.

I chose not to watch it after reading a GG article on why translating it is such a problem. It is not aimed at non-japanese. Just too many references we will not understand. However if you know that and still want to keep watching, go ahead.

That's very true. And I'd say that without reading the TL notes, I'd probably have got no more than half the jokes. But honestly, anyone - especially a regular anime viewer who's picked up a bit of knowledge of Japanese culture - can understand that half, or at least find them funny even without getting the references (the break-dance rakugo scene in episode 3 springs to mind - hilarious, despite not knowing the music video it's referencing. Although the dance moves seemed really familiar). This is especially helped by the surprisingly good translation, a lot of the puns have been localised quite well, and altogether it is enough to still make this show funnier than many other comedy anime I've seen.

Besides which, I'm the sort of person who loves reading the TL notes for things like this and going "Oh, so THAT's what it meant!" about all the jokes I missed. So this show's right up my street.

Even if that doesn't sound appealing though, this is definitely worth trying if you like Japanese style humour in general - lots of puns, plenty of over-the-top comebacks and subtle irony, mixed with a healthy dose of weirdness. If you don't like that, then it'd be completely and utterly uninteresting.

Incidentally, those two Youtube videos I posted are pretty much entirely easily understandable without knowing anything about Japanese. Knowing plenty about anime is a necessity, but that's no problem here :P And I highly recommend them, they're great.

Sorry for the mini-rant here btw, this is one of those shows where I feel like I have to talk someone's ears off about it, and this seemed like the best place :)

The (self)referential humor is one of the reasons why I loved Pani Poni Dash. About 75% of all movie, anime and cultural references flew over my head, but the show was still funny regardless.

The same can be said about Joshiraku – most of the jokes make me wonder WTF they're talking about, but the little I do get, combined with the visual humor, is enough to keep me watching.

That, and both the OP and ED are seriously catchy.
