Something like Welcome to the N.H.K
« on: August 07, 2012, 02:51:08 PM »
Hi there. I finished watching Welcome to the N.H.K a couple hours ago, and it left me craving for more. I liked how this anime focused on a otaku (well, not really an otaku but something like that), and i liked the way it described how hard life can be etc...

Well, what i'm looking for is something similar to this anime, the similarities might be any of these:
A) It's about an otaku or something (comedy, drama, doesn't matter)
B) About the life of a person, how he is getting a job, a wife, anything etc...
C) A high school or college student and his difficulties..

Pretty vague but anything works, perhaps i liked Clannad for the same reason, it had some drama and it showed the life of Tomoya Okazaki, how he graduated, got married, a child...

But don't get me wrong, a comedy would be splendid also, currently looking into Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.
Thanks.

Ore no Imouto ga Konna ni Kawaii ga Nai deals with Otaku culture, though the Otaku is his sister rather than the protagonist himself.

Bakuman is about two high school students who want to become Mangaka, which is pretty Otaku related. It definitely fits B and C as well. It's not currently finished, the third season isn't out yet.

The World God Only Knows covers a very specific aspect of otaku culture, a "galge" player. It's purely a comedy though and not really about his high school life.

Lucky Star has a lot about otaku culture, but it's mostly about comedy as well.

Yojou-han Shinwa Taikei might be something your interested in. There are some similar themes to NHK there, though it's not really Otaku related.

Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei and Genshiken +1 from me.

Wow you almost nailed every single Otaku anime I know :O but I said "almost" there is one more. :P

Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu
About a girl who is an otaku in secret but gets found out by a boy at her school. :)
Oh and it has a 2nd season as well.

Another classic about otaku culture is Otaku no Video. It's kind've odd, considering it has a fair amount of live-action set up as facetious "interviews" with real otaku. One of GAINAX's early works.

Pinky Street is a brand of collectible dolls, and apparently the fictitious world written on the back of the box or whatever actually exists. One of the episodes deals with a guy in his twenties who is super-obsessed with the dolls and is beyond ecstatic when he gets to go to the real Pinky Street and meet all the girls, to the point the dolls are creeped out by him. Only has 2 episodes, about 3 minutes long each.

Di Gi Charat has some tongue-in-cheek otaku bashing. The main characters work at a store catering to otaku, though hate their clientele.

You might want to give Chobits a look if you haven't already.

Black Heaven follows a former guitarist in his '40s who hates his mundane life at the office (and at home), and just happens to be able to save the world. Focuses on his day-to-day frustrations like boring work, wife throwing out his guitar in the trash, his inability to connect with his young son, etc.

+1 to pretty much every suggestion so far. Mine are kind've eclectic, but you've got plenty to work with already. ;D

Rozen Maiden ......desu.
Its only similarity with NHK is that both protagonists are Hikikomori (withdrawn from society).

Hey there!

After finishing "Welcome to the NHK manga" and then watching the anime through online streams (The anime seems stand alone compared to the manga, I liked the manga more but they're both great) I was wondering, will there ever be a BD release of the anime?

The anime isnt here on Bakabt because it is licenced by funimation, right? (Still have no idea why) Plus, the anime has been done and over with for many years now. Where can I find a good torrent of the anime?

I know the best one (at least, from what I've heard) was fansubbed by Oyasumi, is that the best there is on the web? Since its not on bakabt I wouldnt know.

Also, there is not going to be a BD of Welcome to the NHK, right? Is the torrent by Oyasumi or whatever you guys want to recommend a DvD rip?

Thanks a lot! I just want to add this anime to my archive with high regard!

It's blacklisted due to Funimation holding the license, yes. I don't believe the wiki spells out why things get blacklisted, but it's well known that they (and the other companies on the list) actively send out cease and desist orders on content they hold the license for.

As such, you're really not supposed to ask where to get this stuff. The copy I got was literally the first thing I googled for though.

As for what subs, near as I can tell it's a choice between Oyasumi's hardsubbed TV ripped fansubs, or other group's R1 DVD rips, with official subs. I think the consensus favors the fansubs, but video quality probably goes to the DVD. And if you care about the dub you obviously want the DVD copy. No remuxed DVD copies with the fansubs that I saw. =/

I guess its Oyasumi for me, thats what you got, too, right?

Too bad they never made a BD, but then again its an old anime I suppose.

Thanks!

Yeah, though looking into the DVD copies. Subs don't appear terribly different on a cursory inspection, though even with the hardsubs I prefer the fansubbed style over the unstyled yellow DVD ones.

I think Exiled Destiny might be the group to look into that, but there's a couple encodes of the DVD floating around.
