uTorrent Becomes Ad-Supported to Rake in Millions

This goes against the purpose of piracy.
I'm switching to another client.

Haha, uTorrent.

I use ruTorrent on a seedbox, works just dandy for me.

It's not really surprising imo. Seeing how additional things were implemented since 2.0...

I knew nothing of the outside world. I was just a frog in a well.

I've generally not been too unhappy with the way utorrent's developed so far, and I certainly don't agree with all those people who insist it's turned completely crap and only use 1.8 or whatever, so normally I'm happy to keep upgrading to the latest version. I think, however, I'm going to stop and just stick with what I'm currently using (3.1.3) now, because I can't be doing with this. Ads I can accept to an extent, but as soon as they start impacting on the user experience - and adding 'sponsored torrents' to your torrent list definitely does that - it's too much for me.

So yeah, I for one am not impressed.

The latest good version is 2.2.1, everything afterwards is shit and that's also where the whole money making thing started.
It's no wonder, though. That's just how the world works.

Probably me. I have been using 2.0.4 for a few years now. I don't really know what has changed "behind the scenes", but I don't like the look of it, and there's like 5 minutes of configuring stuff until I like it while 2.0.4 is relatively quick to be used.

Do you need to configure it all again when you upgrade? It shouldn't touch your settings at all and just start right back up again as normal after upgrading. Torrents stay loaded and everything.

That said, yeah, beyond various efficiency improvements/changes to the protocol, there's not really much noticeable difference. A few other bits and bobs added (the apps thing for example), but they serve no useful purpose and don't get in the way. There's also the new colour scheme, which I agree isn't as good as the old one. It's too green.

What do you not like about it? Other than the things I've mentioned, not a huge amount was actually changed. I can understand not wanting to upgrade if doing so will take effort, because it might well not be worth it, but trying to claim that it's turned completely shit seems a little silly. They haven't actually added anything much since 2.2.1. Of course, as of the first version with ads in, that argument will hold a bit more weight; but so far I can't really understand it.

They fucked up the interface with ads, bloated the whole torrent display and made hashing slow as shit. I'm creating a good amount of torrents per day and 2.2.1 is a ton faster than anything afterwards.

Yes, he was responding to zzzYuyu, who claims that, in every version above 2.2.1, "they fucked up the interface with ads". He was pointing out that, actually, there aren't any ads in utorrent. Obviously there soon will be, but not in any existing released versions.

actually, there is advertisement in every version of µtorrent above 2.2.1 - the "upgrade to µtorrent plus" button at the bottom of the category list.

The second I see an ad i'm uninstall uTorrent. I'll start looking into other torrent clients or just revert back to an older version.

(click to show/hide)

There's an option to show/hide that in the options menu (Show plus information or the like), which seems to be disabled on your pc...^^

Ah, right. It's been so long I've forgotten about it altogether.

Well, looks like it's time for a change.

I recall using Deluge once and thinking it was ok, I'd like to go with Halite but it looks like it hasn't been developed any further in about 2 years now.

As long as they don't let the silly new shiny things get in the way, I'll still use uTorrent.
