« on: August 18, 2012, 05:54:44 PM »
hi there...

just now i want to copy into laptop some of anime that have long name...
but the windows cant copy it because "file name too long"...
how to fix/prevent/ or is there any way around?

dont tell me to rename the file because its tiring (individual renaming), and for seeding of course...

Use magic?

If your OS doesn't support the length of the name, what are you gonna do about it otherwise  :)

However, check that you don't have too deep folder structure, so that it's not that causing the problem. There's a limit on the total number of characters in the path+filename.

Well, if individual renaming is what you're worried about, use a bulk renamer. Should simplify and ease the task by quite a bit. As for seeding, you'll have to relocate and point out each individual file I guess.

I would suggest doing this first that will most likely solve the problem ... if not then shortening the file name would be the next option.

If its a torrent, everyone else seems to be fine with it. I'd say folder structure is too deep. When you are told 'filename is too long' it actually means 'pathname is too long'. Stupid Windows.

Yeah, I've complained before about the /Incredibly-Stupidly_Long_and_Insanely_Bullshit-Filled_Directory_Path-Filename[HEYTHISISMYAWESOMEZENCODE][HIGHDEFINITION_HD_BLUE-RAYZ_1080p][English_dubz_with_JAP_dual-language][10-bit_Hi-10P]/Incredibly-Stupidly_Long_and_Insanely_Bullshit-Filled_Directory_Path-Filename[HEYTHISISMYAWESOMEZENCODE][HIGHDEFINITION_HD_BLUE-RAYZ_1080p][English_dubz_with_JAP_dual-language][10-bit_Hi-10P][CEF43D67A].mkv naming "conventions" before.

Basically I've been told to go fuck myself and eat on it by t3h 133tzf4gg4tz that think it's a funny prank to pull off in between fap sessions.

Look to see if you can edit just one or two of the directory names instead of each filename.  Sometimes you can temporarily use just a single letter or number to get through the transfer.  Sometimes you're just fucked and have to make compromises to accommodate t3h 133tzf4gg4tz.  You haven't lived until you get one of those directories paths that is so fucked that it can't be edited or deleted.  ::)
I win, once again, in my never-ending struggle against victory.

Yeah, sadly there's not really much chance of getting the file names changed on BBT. There are a few things you can do to try and make organising them easier though; for example, you can use the Windows subst command to create a virtual drive (in other words, if your videos were downloaded to, say, C:\Users\you\Documents\Bittorrent Downloads\stupid long release name\filename.mkv", you can use substitute to create a virtual drive (with any letter you like), which redirects to that folder. So you could access it with the path "I:\filename.mkv" instead of the original, for example. Quite handy in cases like this). You can also use symbolic links (google them) to achieve a similar effect.

In an ideal world BakaBT would implement a rule that ridiculously long filenames have to be shortened, but I can't see that being likely to happen any time soon (although it would be nice if it did). In an even more ideal world, release groups wouldn't be retarded enough to name files like that in the first place, but frankly, that's even less likely.

Since it's an archiving site primarily, it helps to keep filenames the same just to transition from the original location to bakabt.

But you can rename the directory things get saved to when you first download the torrent, which can save you some character space.

I prefer doing it just so I can get consistent naming conventions (since just about no one can agree how much information they need to cram into the filename, nor what position in the name each bit of info goes). Hell, it's just nice to have everything sorted by the name of the series first instead of all those loading sub/encoding groups (who looks for anime by the group first, anyway?)

You can shorten the folder names though. Make them one word each and maybe that will help.

Long file names are typically released by retarded groups. I guess we just have to deal with it.
I only ever put the bare essentials in my filenames, such as resolution, bitdepth, audio (dual or single - if single, then this is left out) and group or individual that encoded it. If I am doing a portable/mobile anime encode, then I add the specific intended device name.
I also put the group/individual name at the END of the folder/directory. Who wants to look for 'lucky star' and first have to search for '[elysium]'...
I really wish some groups could adopt this strategy.

Sometimes you just cannot help the long names.  Check the Sailor Moon Music Collection for instance.
Since going over the limit is usually subjective to individuals situations and appears to be a problem in only one OS,  I see no need to consider shortening in the guidelines.

What I really hated, until I just went and renamed everything, was having half stuff sorted group first and half series name first. Ugh.

Personally I went with "Series Name [group name] - resolution, source (as in TV, BD, DVD, Web, etc)" and append dual audio if it has it. I just assume 10-bit if it's available, but source was useful since I replace lower quality copies all the time.

Same issue with the Gurren Lagann torrents. There are a large number of tracks that have names that are insanely long.
