Staff applications *here*
« on: September 03, 2012, 05:25:31 PM »
With the never ending flow of offers as well as some recent staff changes, it's that time again when we open our doors and accept some new slave roosters. Nope, no censorship this time... Requirements are more or less unchanged from before so enjoy some nice copy/pasta.

Without further delay, moving on to requirements:
If you believe you're up to the task leave us a comment here telling us a bit about yourself and why you feel you would make an excellent contributing staff member. A résumé of sorts. We won't hire randomly, your application will be reviewed and we will do a background check on ya!

What we're looking for:
- Familiar with our Wiki info*
- Familiar with our torrent offer system*
- Knows the difference between audio/video formats
- Knows how to make a comparison of releases
- Respectable, not a douche.
- Must know how to use IRC. This is our main form of contact.
- As always, can speak coherent English...

*very important~!

Not as important, but a plus:
- Knows HTML/php coding
- Offered/Adopted a torrent before
- Has a fast/respectable connection (For quickly obtaining different releases for comparison purposes)

We get a lot of new torrent submissions on a daily basis. We don't have enough staff members to look after them (many retired in one way or another). This will be your main objective! If hired of course...

Any questions come find me on IRC, or consult with a staff member.
Submit your applications here. All applications sent through PM will be automatically rejected!

I'll put in an application

Familiar with our Wiki info:
I am very familiar with the wiki and work on it from time to time. I also run the Wiki Expansion Project.

Familiar with our torrent offer system:
I've offered torrents before and often follow what's happening on the Offers page.

Knows the difference between audio/video formats:
I'm familiar with the different audio/video formats that are being used. Terms like Hi10P, containers, FLAC, etc. i'm very accustomed to.

Knows how to make a comparison of releases:
I make comparisons often for offers that are both mine and others. I also know that different anime needs different types of scene comparisons (Like action scenes).

Respectable, not a douche:
I'm a nice, respectable guy. I have better things to do than be a dick to people over the internet.

Must know how to use IRC. This is our main form of contact:
I'm always on IRC and use it on a regular. Other than lurking in all the BBT channels I also use it for xdcc.

As always, can speak coherent English:

Yes I can speak coherent English. I'm not a grammar freak but I like to type out complete, understandable sentences.

Knows HTML/php coding:
I'm adept in HTML/CSS. I can read and understand Javascript and PHP but I cannot write it. I've taken a few web design classes and I know it very well.

Offered/Adopted a torrent before:
I've offered and adopted many torrents before. (Most of which are adoptions)

Has a fast/respectable connection:
70 Mbps Download / 15 Mbps Upload (Downloading releases is no problem)

About Me:
I'm someone who is hardworking and creative who likes to contribute to the community. I'm currently in college majoring in Graphic Design. During high school I found BakaBT and have been here ever since. I help out regularly in the support channel, creating descriptions for people, expanding the wiki, and provide comparisons for releases. As I said before in my application I run the Wiki Expansion Project (which is still active) and on my user profile you can see a list of most of the descriptions I made for other people. A lot of the descriptions i've made have become better over time because I learn new things everyday. I like to try new things and am always welcome to help and constructive criticism.

About Moderator Work:
I can help out with the offers in making comparisons and other work if needed. Also I can work in the support channel since I know how things work there.

Thanks for reading  :)

I don't have a respectable net connection so i am not applying. But i do have a few things to say.
People should submit a CV as done in case of a job rather than just writing wall of texts answering Duki's Requirements.
Sorry Duki for going off topic. :)

Not good enough? :D

I've become familiar with the offer system and what is acceptable in BakaBT. Many of my latest offers are being accepted in a flash and I do enjoy looking after some of my offers. :P

Also, I access BakaBT everyday and have a look at offers, accepted torrents, and of course my beloved stats.

I've also rented a dedicated server exclusively for seeding torrents in BakaBT for years now and I could use it to download releases for comparison. Home connection is 30/3.

Adopted a couple of torrents.

Love IRC.

Finally I know I probably am not gonna make it through but it's always worth a try. :)

Long time lurker, first time poster.

I see that you wrote knowledge in HTML/PHP up there. While I don't have enough time to apply to a staff position, if you need a helping hand to code some not too large html/php/js stuff, feel free to (⌐■_■)σ(*゜Д゜*) poke me with what you have in mind.
I like to work at my own pace (mostly because of how random my free time is), so stuff with a short deadline would probably not suit me. If you're not in a hurry,  that's another story  8)

This is not really a staff application since there's no position for this (outsider or insider status are both fine to me), so you needn't see it as such.

Regards, and good luck to all applicants!

My life isn't very stable atm and I dunno if I'll be able to afford internet for very much longer. I might've thought about applying if that wasn't the case, but I'd probably be turned down because I don't know about coding or comparing releases heh ;>_>

Ok, i'm pretty new here, but i'm gonna give it a go anyway since i'm sure i can help with alot of stuff.

I'll start to introduce myself :
Hi, I'm Ferry (also thats my IRC nick, i dont know why i didn't use it here :P), i'm 30 years old and from The Netherlands.
I'm pretty new to BakaBT, but i'm a fast learner and already have years of anime experience (i've been watching anime since my 16th, so over 14 years :) ).
I also almost every year go for a few weeks to Japan as a vacation and am generally interested in the culture there.
If i could i would move to Tokyo :) (and i have been planning for that even)
I currently got my own private collection of about 800 complete anime series (~7.5TB) and waiting to expand those to even more when my new fileserver is ready.

What do i think i can provide to the staff members ? :
I think for starters that my knowledge of web systems would be handy for a site like BakaBT. I've worked in the hosting business for over 12 years now.
I've been the main technician for the biggest commercial hosting company in the Netherlands and at this moment I'm a senior staff member at the biggest broadcasting company in the Netherlands.
My main specialities are in hosting systems like Apache (webserver), MySQL (database), BIND (nameserver), Varnish (caching) and many more. I currently maintain webserver systems with sites that process over 10M hits/min (10,000,000).
I'm also very experienced in several unix/web related program languages like PHP, Bash, Perl, Python and Ruby.

Since i'm pretty new to this site i know i might not fit the description of what you are currently looking for, but i think that my overall knowledge about web services would be a help for you guys.

I'm willing to help where ever i can.

What we're looking for:
- Familiar with our Wiki info*
I'm somewhat familiar with the Wiki info. Since I'm new I'm sure I'm not as knowledgeable as some others, but i'm a fast learner :)

- Familiar with our torrent offer system*
i have not used it my self yet, but i know the workings behind it.

- Knows the difference between audio/video formats
Yes, i am knowledgable about audio and video formats and how they work.

- Knows how to make a comparison of releases
Yes, i think i'm more then capable of this.

- Respectable, not a douche.
That is for you to decide, i can only prove that i am respectable.

- Must know how to use IRC. This is our main form of contact.
I've virtualy live on IRC since i got a internet connection.

- As always, can speak coherent English...
I think this application will prove that sufficient.

Not as important, but a plus:
- Knows HTML/php coding
I'm skilled in PHP coding for serveral years now, and ofcourse i know HTML.
I'm a MSc in Computer Sciences, with promoting topic programming & networking.

- Offered/Adopted a torrent before
No, not yet. I've been looking at this, but i haven't done it yet.

- Has a fast/respectable connection (For quickly obtaining different releases for comparison purposes)
I currently have a 100/100mbit connection thats getting upgraded to 500/500 soonish (once they've upgraded the network in my neighborhood)

May as well but i doubt if i get

Familiar with our Wiki info:
yes i am fammilar with the wiki as i have it open in  a tab to refer to whilst on bakabt (both are set as my home pages)

Familiar with our torrent offer system:
I haven't offered any myself at the moment, as i just just started downloading my favourite series, that and my ratio isn't that good..

Knows the difference between audio/video formats:
I'm familiar with the different audio/video formats that are being used and can them most formats. i noticed most torrents have a mix of file formats which makes it hard to instantly watch them one after the one unless you install loads of codecs

Knows how to make a comparison of releases:
I make comparisons often to find the best qauility to download, to compare the infomation given about them.
i'm no expert, but it sounds simple enough.

Respectable, not a douche:
I'm a nice, i don't go out of my to get what i want, however if something is wrong i will point it out
like mixed formats in the torrents. i know certain files are harder to attain but at least you could convert them to a common format.

Must know how to use IRC. This is our main form of contact:
haven't used it in a while but i still have it

As always, can speak coherent English:
of course, I am british however my spelling can suck at times.

Knows HTML/php coding:
I'm adept in HTML/CSS and some simple PHP anything I don't know how to do i look it up and Im starting java at college next week.

Offered/Adopted a torrent before:
same as "Familiar with our torrent offer system" I just started downloading torrents most of which are sending to fix my ratio

Has a fast/respectable connection:
got sky broadband 100MB download package however average speed is probably half that

I'm going to go straight off and say the following.
Those of you who simply list default requirements and why you achieve those and those only will not be considered by me when staff discuss.
Those who write a block of text and say that they're good at English will also be ignored.
So far only Reesebiz has a semi-okay application and even then it's poor. Katosama is getting there with his cover-letter and much expanded personal information.

Please refer to my comments made during the last recruitment process.

Ohh. Its this time again. Goodluck to all.

2 things to note.
1. Being active in the community is a good way of getting yourself noticed. Applying with 3 previous posts and no constructive comments or anything like that won't get you a spot so just don't bother. ::)
2. The net connection is OPTIONAL. I was accepted with a shitty rural Australian net. If you just post about how many torrents you have done and how fast your internet is then you are likely to not be accepted.

We want to see people who know the BakaBT system. Who know how BakaBT is run and why things are done in such a way. We don't want someone who will approve every torrent that comes through and make 700 mistakes just because the community is being bitchy. We want people that make logical decisions with supporting arguments that align with the standards that BakaBT continues to bring.

That is just my note. Take it for any who care.

To quickly fill in some questions I got.

Can people who applied before apply again? Of course.

Is there an age limit? Lets say, sort of. There is not a limit per se, but lets just say that we won't consider 12 year old kids. We'd appreciate if the staff is mature or at least close to it. But this will not influence the decision too much. There is no top age as long as you have time to dedicate.

How much free time should I dedicate? That is all up to you. But the more free time you have the better. At least a couple of hours a day...

May I ask you or other staff members some questions that were not covered? Yes you may, but bear in mind that if you present yourself as pushy or harass and annoy us you're probably diminishing your chances. Simply utilising common sense there will help you greatly. You can reach us on IRC.

I lurk here quite a bit, so guess I might as well take a shot at applying.

Introduction:
Hi, I'm Akai. I have been in previous fansub groups in the past such as Kaizou (not to be mistaken for Kaizoku!), DCTP, and DATS. I'm pretty familiar with most stuff around here I'd say.
I have quite a bit of anime and have encoded enough to know my way around Videos and Audio.

As I have quite a bit of free time every day I think I can help with the offers a good bit.

I'm pretty familiar with the Wiki info, I've browsed over it a couple times. I have just recently used

Familiar with Wiki info: I've somewhat familiar with it, I've browsed through it a couple of times.

Familiar with our torrent offer system:
I just recently offered my first torrent so I've had quite a learning experience from that.

[/b]Respectable, not a douche:[\b]
I'm a very friendly person and am very respectful

[/b]Must know how to use IRC:[/b]
I've been hanging out on IRC for almost 10 years now.

[/b]Know the difference between audio/video formats:[/b]
As I've said above I've dabbled in encoding here and there so I know my way around audio and video formats.

Knows how to make a comparison of releases:
I think of myself more than capable of this as I research and inspect releases for the anime i watch to make sure I have the best quality.

As always, can speak coherent English:[\b]
I was born in the US and have never been outside of the country, I think I qualify for this.

Has a fast/respectable connect:
I can download around 800kb/s atm, and upload at 60kb/s, but have a seedbox for fast seeding. Switching to a 40/3 connection later this month.

Offererd/Adopted a torrent before:
Just recently offered my first torrent.

Knows HTML/PHP Coding:
I know HTML, CSS, some intermediate Javascript and can understand some PHP, but not code in it myself.

Eh, might as well. Regretted not giving it a shot last time.

Familiar with our Wiki info:

I consider myself reasonably familiar, but the main site rule to me just seems to be common sense. There's nothing crazy or convoluted, which is really the main reason I'm still here.

Familiar with our torrent offer system:

I've offered multiple torrents myself and the system really seems quite simple to me.

Knows the difference between audio/video formats:

I learned just about everything there is to know during one of my many Wikipedia crawls a while back, except for Hi10P, which I learned about here.

Knows how to make a comparison of releases:

It's not something I enjoy, but I'm able to do it. Seems rather tedious to me, but I guess what needs to be done needs to be done.

Respectable, not a douche:

Surely this is for other people to decide? I've seen many complete douches who would swear they're not, despite the obvious reality.

Must know how to use IRC. This is our main form of contact:

Card-carrying IRC addict here, using Irssi in a screen session (I had a revelation one day that IRC is just text, so my client should be too, hence Irssi). I've also acted as an operator and even ran a few IRC channels in the past so I'd be good as an operator too once I've cleared the rust away.

As always, can speak coherent English:

A while back I was noted for my refusal to drop punctuation and capital letters as seemed fashionable at the time, because they were invented for a bloody good reason! Also I am English and did well in English classes at school, so there you go.

Knows HTML/PHP coding:

I actually coded my own website (now mostly inactive) where I pretty much taught myself both HTML and basic PHP. PHP was actually a real revelation in making the site easier to maintain.

Offered/Adopted a torrent before:

Offered several and adopted two.

Has a fast/respectable connection (For quickly obtaining different releases for comparison purposes):

About 1MB/sec download and 100KB/sec upload by my observations, which is about as fast as I can get around these parts.

About Me:

I'm a transgendered 26 year old without a whole lot going on in life. I like my anime, my manga, and wasting much time watching YouTube Let's Plays. I've done staff work on other websites in the video game and emulation communities before that does seem broadly similar to what would be asked of me here, but drifted away as the sites I was at declined and lapsed into inactivity. I've been increasingly angry as of late at what feels like a growing trend towards unavoidable censorship online (here in Britain the Daily Mail's been pushing an 'opt-in' system for online porn as of late, which seems like a recipe for disaster if ever I saw one) and learning about the TV Tropes purge recently incited a real sense of betrayal from what had seemed like a refuge before now.

The video game and emulation sites were my main focus online until last year really, when I watched Zophar's Domain finally splutter to a halt, which is when anime and manga went from being a side focus to taking centre stage. I've always kind of liked them but it's since I've been at BakaBT that I've really come to respect the mediums for their potential to create stories that just couldn't really be done in other mediums. That's probably really why TV Tropes got to me, because it seemed like yet another instance of anime and manga getting a raw deal yet again simply because they're not as respected as novels or live-action. I've seen the exact same thing happen to video games before, and it does sometimes seem there's a force following me, that hates the things I love.

Well that's enough freeform rambling I guess. That's me, and that's my application.

I'll put in an application as well this time.

Tracker Profile: Sherlock

About Me:
I'm a guy who likes to have fun in doing anything in life, if not, most of the times, I feel it isn't worth doing. I'm a college student, in my last year of my Bachelors course. I also part-time as a proofreader/editor as I love doing it. Although I've been here for less than a year, I still love every moment spent on this site(which is a lot).I'm also in the process of learning HTML/CSS properly, so as to better myself in that.

What I can contribute to Staff:
Since my expertise lies mostly in manga, I would probably be more suitable as a manga moderator. However, I can work as part of support staff too(if required). Also, I would be more than willing to slave for anime too, if required, provided I'm guided on the finer details. [I'm always willing to learn.]
Also, since I have free-time of around 4-5 hours which I can contribute to BBT[I lurk a lot more], I can help out wherever required.

Now as to the default requirements..

Familiar with our Wiki info:
I am rather familiar with the wiki. Haven't run afoul of any rules in a major way since my first upload. I also am a part of the Wiki Expansion Project[fixed half of the keywords before RL got in the way].

Familiar with our torrent offer system:
Yes, I'm rather familiar with how the Offer system works, since I tend to upload manga quite frequently.

Knows the difference between audio/video formats:
I wouldn't say that I'm an expert, but yes, I do know enough about them to carry my own weight around here. I'm always willing to learn more though.

Knows how to make a comparison of releases:
I'm not sure of my expertise in this [seeing as I don't make much(any) anime offers], but looking at other's comparisions and the recommendations for comparisons on various offers has atleast left me with enough info on what to take comparisons of..[Light/Dark Scenes etc]

Respectable, not a douche:
I am, and always will claim to be a respectable guy and am generally polite. However, that's still up for others to decide.

Must know how to use IRC. This is our main form of contact:
Well, I do know how to use IRC [used to lurk on #themanaworld] and still use XDCC quite frequently for files to my offers. So yes, I'm quite familiar with IRC.

As always, can speak coherent English:
I work as a part-time proofreader/editor in RL, so I'm good at English. I am also an incurable grammar-freak.

Knows HTML/php coding:
I'm okay with HTML/CSS. Although I confess to frequently asking blubart and Reesebiz for descriptions[and description help], I can atleast wade through codes myself to effect any minor changes as necessary.
Freezing, Gintama, Samurai Deeper Kyo, Shinryaku! Ika Musume are some of the ones I've done on my own, although I've borrowed elements from other's descriptions.

Offered/Adopted a torrent before:
Quite frequently, however, almost all of them are manga[along with artbooks].
Satoshi Collection comes to mind, although I had to make a re-offer for it as per Staff advice.

Has a fast/respectable connection:
I submit I have a rather bad connection [Actual Down/Up speeds are around 60 KBp/s normally.], so this may count against me.

Again, I confess to be a manga freak[my uploads and adoptions are mostly only this], so it may count against me. I don't tend to offer anime as 1. I have a bad connection and 2. There are lots of dedicated uploaders for it, unlike manga. I love manga and fell in love with it ever since my first reads[Hetakoi, Love Hina and Change 123]. Clannad and Clannad-AS are amongst my favourite anime though.

That's about me and my profile. Thank you for reading.  :)
