Computer works after few tests. Took about an hour and a half to set it up with minimum components. Got 150GB Raptor (main) and the rest 4TB WD Reds. I got lost trying to ... "install" FreeNAS8 on the USB so I gave up. Going to install Windows 8 and set it up on the computer really quick. I want this thing to fire up already.

theres a neat thing about windows, if you rightclick my computer's window theres an option there called "add a network location", it works like dropbox or like an external harddisk.

although i'm pretty sure linux also has this feature, dunno about OSX.

Yeah. Trying to figure out how to set it up so I can do everything on the network from my computer, but if any other network connects to the NAS then they can only "read" what is on it.

Maybe there is a way to make an "Admin" and make a "User" group? So the Admin (me) can do whatever and "User" can only read the files?

i think i've done that before but i've forgot how, although it should be related to admin/guest privileges.
the only PC that was able to write on disk was my main system, and any other was denied write but they could copy/read files.

Mm I just want them to "read". But before we even jump to that, I can't figure out how to add the network on my main computer. Both are not connected to the router, but to the modem which also has multiple connections. So I have to transfer everything back to the router, I'm guessing?

if you could draw how you've connected everything up like a diagram it would be easier to understand.

a modem with multiple ports is similar to a router, the modem has a built-in switch node where the modem manages the NAT and DHCP.

its possible that you just havent port forwarded the NAS, or the settings of the NAS is in "i dont want visitors" mode.

I wish I could spend more time on this but I'm in the middle of class. I'll sum it up really quick.

NAS + Main computer connected to MODEM which has 4 ports out. Other computers connected to the router (not the modem). So right now the NAS and Main computer are my main concern. I want to first make sure these two are working properly. I don't think I have an interface for the modem like how the router does (192.168.1.1 is what I mean). How do I forward the NAS properly? Even though I did say it could "share" files with other computers.

try bridging the modem and router first.

I know this might seem random but I was looking a while back and saw that some people use Ethernet in place of USB. Now I know this would really only see benefits if you had like a 10gbs or higher Ethernet set up, or if it was between two stationary units, etc. But I was wondering do any of you have a set up like that?

Note * I'm not really asking of the benefits of this setup or the draw backs , I mean if you want to post them I guess you could but I don't have this setup nor do I expect to. (unless I had at least a 10Gb/s Ethernet card on both PCs and one was my main and the other like a file server)

no home setup will ever need a 10GB/s setup. I have one but only because I could do it. gbit eithernet trumps USB anyday and the ease of access for multiple places is what makes it worth while.. I assume you are talking about storage. If you have USB you set it up to a host then have to share the host and so fourth where if its straight ethernet just access it from anywhere and be done.

just going out on a limb here but I assume your MOdem and router are not configured correctly. Is one running on 192.168.0.x and the other on 192.168.1.x?  As this sounds like your problem as you have different subnets. if you want to move forward I would look on to seting the Modem into bridge mode so it does not handle dhcp at all or if you dont want to mess with your setup change all the subnet maskes to 255.255.0.0 so they can see each other

what happens if the subnet mask is 0.0.0.0?

http://www.techrepublic.com/article/cisco-ip-subnetting-101-learn-more-about-all-1s-and-all-0s-subnet-masks/

edit: ok i found a decent explanation, 0.0.0.0 mask turns the network completely transparent.

Its look down on for doing same as 255.255.0.0 you should never zero a subnet under real practice where your addressing matters. But for home use no problem. No home network should ever need more then one subnet unless you are trying to achieve something interesting.

no idea how to set up the modem to be honest, but the router I can set it up.

Well on some other forms people with the latest amd drivers actually report performance a tad better than the Nvidia on normal to high settings. Guess the game works software make a real difference near ultra settings.

So LG G3 was announced today. With a QHD screen (1440p) and a sexy design and a camera. Seriously though, I am actually excited for this phone. I mean I stop being impressed with phones after iPhone 4 and samsung s3. There is also the fact that 5.5" screen is so compact and that back buttons are freaking awesome to use ( I used those on g2 and I loved it, but this is my personal opinion so....). If I was on contract I would immediately order one right now. But as usual, there always has to be sad thing and this isn't either waterproof/dust proof in the least.
