Help with .srt subtitles (noob question maybe)

I need some help. But before you read I want you to know that if you're just going to reply with something rude then don't reply at all. This community can be so rude sometimes...

This is my predicament. I downloaded the mobile suit zeta gundam movie trilogy from nyaa because bakabt doesn't have it BD (WHY NOT?!??!) Only issue is that these are encoded with spanish soft subs .srt. I can read spanish but I prefer english subs: actually I prefer dubs... but there's no NA release for the trilogy. Now I'm a complete noob with these kind of things and this may be an easy fix but is there a way I can retrieve or find the .srt subs from another torrent like the one here on bakabt and put them on the torrent I downloaded from nyaa?

Side note: I friggin' love gundam. Been gundam fan forever and grew up playing UC gundam games on ps2. Zeta is my favorite gundam by far.

easiest way to do this is to find an english soft subbed file from any group, then mux the sub track into the 1080p file. You may need to change the font size of the subs, either through the built-in filter on your player or using aegisub to modify the sub styles.

You will need to open the existing Spanish subs, so you can see their timing.  If they're the same (or very close) to the subs you download separately, then it'll work fine.  If not, you'd need to re-time the subs; not difficult, exactly (you just change the timestamp for each subbed line), but tedious.

The alternative, if the subs are out of sync, is to simply change the timing in your media player/ffdshow.

Not really. If the files are nearly the same (they're the same length with no additional or cut scenes, and they're played at the same speed) then it's just a simple matter of adding or subtracting the difference from the timecodes. Just select all the times in aegisub and select shift times from the timing menu.

Quite often you will see a lot of subtitles that are not in good sync because the video (older anime) is variable bit rate.
It's a pain in the arse, but newer anime being constant frame rate is much nicer

It also depends on how much, if any, content at the start of the video is included.  For example, most sub groups don't keep the stuff the TV station airs just before the show, yet SOME do.  If this happens, the subs will be out of sync, VBR or CBR.

During the main body of the video file, commercials are another possible problem.  Again, most sub groups remove the commercial break found in the middle of most anime.  Some do NOT, however (they're often hilarious), and this will again, of course, screw up the timing of subs.

Hmm.... I see. Thanks everyone for replying. This is clearing up many things since I'm very inexperienced with this. I going to wait till someone does their own bluray encode of the zeta gundam movie trilogy with english subs instead. This is all too much for me haha, but I understand. Thank you

Honestly dude. You say the community can be rude, but I want to point out that you kinda just answered your own question. Why is there no BD release on BakaBT? Because the only complete release is Spanish. There is no complete English-subbed Blu-ray release at the moment. The only group working on it that I know is Encodergasm, and they've only released the first two movies in BD format.

Since when is there no North American release In fact, radionerd even says that the subs in his DVD release are from the R1 DVD:

So yeah, the subs are taken off of the 2010 R1 DVDs.

It's just that the R1 DVD release was subtitled-only, so there's no English dub.

Except that there usually aren't commercials in the middle of movies. There may be some difference caused if one group leaves introductory studio logos in, though.

If you still wish to attempt this:

1) Download the DVD versions from BakaBT.
2) Obtain mkvextract (GIYF).
3) Use mkvextract to obtain the subtitles (which will be in .ass format, not .srt) and any fonts from the 3xr release that you don't already have.
4) Install the new fonts on your system.
5) Open the Blu-Ray encodes, and drag-and-drop the .ass files onto them. This will load the subs as external subtitle files.
6) If you're using Media Player Classic, you can use F1 and F2 to make the subtitles display earlier or later. Play around with these until the subs appear at the correct time relative to the dialogue. There won't be a need to open the subtitle files themselves, but you will need to hold F1 or F2 for a while if one version has a multisecond studio intro.
