This is good idea. I keep my battery in a drawer though, normal temperature doesn't hurt it so much when half charged.

The biggest cause for a lithium battery to not last as long is age.  The older the battery, even if it is perfectly taken care of, the less time the charge will last.  Taking super care of a laptop battery is a pain in the ass and really does not help that much.  The best things you can do is not leaving the battery depleted(for weeks), and cooking it(like leaving it in a 100 degree car in the summer).  If it is not a problem for you to remove it when your plugged in, and fully charged go for it.  It will improve lifespan, just not much.

Doing some strange ritual to the battery when you first get it wont do anything but, waste charge cycles.  There is only a handful of things that will harm the batterys lifespan and really nothing that will save it(unless you invent a way to stop it from aging).

I call it testing while still under warranty.

Keeping fully charged battery in hot temperature reduces it's lifespan quite fast. Example of this conditions is constant AC power usage. If you rarely take your laptop with you it's good idea to remove half charged battery. Of course it will slowly deplete and nothing prevents it from aging but removing it prevents from high temperature and 100% charge all the time. My two year old battery still has about 90% of it's capacity, I use it once a month.
