~bump~

changed the name to a more general topic.

i just got a new phone called "cherry mobile - flame" aka "karbonn A21 - rebrand" for roughly $150.
(click to show/hide)
pros? specs-to-price wise is worth every penny, pretty much over shadows most of the cons.
cons? awful quality control is one, and it's stupid battery capacity... well i can make do with that using a battery pack.

notes:
it seems that a 1.2ghz dualcore snapdragon S4 (A9 - ARMv7+NEON)
isn't enough to software decode 720P medium-high bitrate encodes(not 10bit) using MX player with ARMv7+NEON codec.
hardware acceleration on this phone doesn't seem to work at all, MX player keeps crashing.

questions:
can anyone recommend a good battery saver other than juice defender? i'm currently using CPU Tuner to control CPU clocks and some connectivity based on battery level, boosted battery life by about 300%(from 2hrs to ~8hrs usage)!

edit~
current apps i have:
AirDroid
Amazon Kindle (haven't tried it yet)
Battery+
Business Calendar (defo way better than stock calendar)
CPU Tuner
HDR Camera
LightLED
MX Player
Neutron MP (i only use it when its docked, its a freaking battery vampire!)
Opera Mobile
Perfect Viewer
PowerAMP (i use it as the default music player)
QuickPic
RealCalc
TitaniumBackup

o.o minimalist! although that really isn't minimal XD

now that reminded me, is there an app that can take over the screen's auto-brightness? the stock is really retarded for some reason.

Just found out one amazing thing about iPhones with iOS version 6. The Hot Spot feature is either bugged or AT&T wants you to pay more money to rip you off.

Androids already have Hot Spots in their OS. I upgraded and fixed my co-worker's computer connecting easily through my G2X rather than his iPhone 4S.

Another good reason not to get iPhone. In fact, I know for sure iPhone is not even worth getting. We both did the research to see why does it ask us to call or visit the carrier rather than just simply turning on the feature. And it seems like you have to purchase this extra feature, excluding having Internet on your phone, separately.

Go get ripped off if you feel like it. If you've got 2G-4G on your phone and it's an android (versions 2.0.x+) then you can make it a hot spot without sweat.

I don't have one because I hardly ever used it when I did have one (Sidekick3).

If I did get one it would have been the HTC Desire-Z, but they don't make those anymore. I don't like the new touchscreen only bullshit all these new iClones have (I'm calling them that cause they're all clones of that same garbage model of phone). I need a physical qwerty keyboard on my phone for that tactile feel.

Anyways, I googled and these are the "current" 2012-2013 models it looks like I'd have to choose from (assuming that source was reliable):
Sony Ericsson XPERIA Pro
LG Rumor Reflex
Samsung Transform Ultra
Motorola Photon Q
Samsung Galaxy S Relay
Pantech Marauder
Samsung Stratosphere
Pantech Crossover
LG Enlighten
Samsung Intercept
Motorola Cliq 2
Sony Ericsson txt pro
Kyocera Milano
Nokia E7
Samsung Epic 4G
Motorola DROID 2 Global
Motorola DROID 2 (CDMA)
Motorola DROID 4
Samsung R910 Galaxy Indulge
Sony Ericsson XPERIA X10 Mini Pro

I'm not looking at the moment, so I won't bother researching which of those is the best. But, that's where I'd start from anyhow. I'd probably look at the DROID 4 first, just cause they have all those amazingly cool commercials that have nothing whatsoever to do with their phones... hahaha

So any future phone that is touchscreen only is relegated to being an iClone?

I need a physical qwerty keyboard on my phone for that tactile feel.
I completely understand this.

My first smartphone was a Black Berry and I was instantly hooked on qwerty. For awhile, having a qwerty keyboard was the most important feature to me. My last qwerty phone was a HTC Touch Pro 2 and I held off a long time before finally upgrading to a touchscreen only. Honestly, I upgraded kicking and screaming but there is soooo little choice for qwerty users.

After getting my HTC Thunderbolt, I really missed my keyboard for a couple months but I got used to having to input everything on the screen. Now, I am very proficient typing on the screen. In fact, I really don't miss my keyboard anymore.

It is one of those things where you just have to take the plunge.

If it's ~90%+ similar to this, then yes:

I have long nails. I type so slowly and inaccurately with my fingertips that it's not even worth the time that it takes to type. And I'm not about to get rid of my beloved french mani just so I can type on a damn phone.

I won't use any device that requires I type using a touchscreen. Even if they could detect nail input, I prefer being able to feel something physically go down.

What are they supposed to do? People want big screens with 16:9 aspect ratios. That is the ideal form factor for such a screen. There really isn't any other design that could accommodate such a screen without looking like it is from a 1960's science fiction show. Hell, even most qwerty phones look like that when the keyboard is hidden. Are you going to go out of your way to get a phone that looks like Black Berry or an old Treo just so you can tout not having an iClone?

Is every tablet just a clone of the iPad because they all are of a rectangular design with a screen in the middle?

Don't get me wrong. I understand you don't like the iPhone. Neither do I. It is an inferior device when compared to other high end smartphones. But I am not about to miss out on a great phone just because it has the same shape as an iPhone. That is just silly.

I wouldn't get a blackberry/whatever-garbage style of phone with a tiny screen and tiny buttons. But ones with physical qwerty keypads are different. The distinction you brought up is like this:

But while we're at it, I'm not a hipster. It isn't about "touting;" it's about functionality.

also, with that mindset of yours every dumbphone thats been released are all nokia ripoffs. also since you have a human face you're pretty much a german ripoff (hitlar!!!)

but seriously, you're being stupid, not because everything looks like the first thing that came out doesn't mean they're the same thing.

You're the one being stupid, prescribing one thing to everything. "Oh, well if you call touchscreen only smartphones that look 95% similar to an iPhone an iClone then your face is hitler hur dur dur" Are you fucking retarded? Seriously?

I call them iClones (which honestly was a whimsical joke to begin with, like people calling Microsoft Micro$oft or Microsuck) because iPhone was the first one that came out with that stupid design, after which everyone copied them. They're essentially the same exact phone version in version out with slightly different firmware and hardware. They all feature the same 90%+ similar design I showed above and are totally useless to anyone with long nails.

In the mid-to-late 90's, cellphone models were vastly different. Occasionally a new trendy one would come along and some others would copy their design, but things continually progressed. But now, design has stagnated to a singular design.

Of course, I'm not saying that a large screen is a bad thing, or even the design itself (other than heat sensitive touchscreens). But, they are just ripoffs of the original iPhone, and thus the name. I didn't like the functionality of the first, and I don't like the functionality of its 900 billion clone models they've come out with since then.

The only useful ones are the ones with a full qwerty keyboard, and the large screen. If you look at that screenshot earlier, even if you compare it to a full qwerty one like this one:

The base model of it is 90% similar. The speaker/logo and random button areas are exactly in the same spot, screen and size almost exactly the same. But, it has a physical keypad which separates it from the iPhone clones. They're unique, different, they've evolved. But more than that, they're actually useful to me.

Here's the last style of phone I owned:

And honestly, ones like these are just amazing...

They're essentially miniaturized laptops. Anyways, the full qwerty keypad is what's important to me since I can't use a touchscreen with my nails.

Luckily for iPhone 4/5 fans, there's an add-on you can get that adds a full qwerty keypad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2OlFK3-I9gc

Looks like it's only $20, so that's good. There's already lots of models with them though, so it doesn't really matter overall... but it's still pretty cool.

lol and you seriously need to reread what i said, you just practically skipped the main point of that reply and raged away with your awful tastes.

you outa really learn how to use external keyboards, you really just lack the thought of it.
Edit: regular bluetooth keyboards works as well.
