not really, but you did lack the thought of packing your own keyboard instead, sure it may be troublesome but how often do you even type letters for a keyboard to matter.
as for the touchscreen failing letter accuracy because you aren't used to it, http://www.swype.com/ or the good old T9 layout works.
pretty much all your complains boils down to you being not used to virtual keyboard, what would people say? get over it.

And when I had a phone, 90%+ of what I used it for was texting, posting on forums, instant messaging, e-mail, or browsing the web. So uh.... pretty much the entire fucking time.

Tiff, while I'm a guy and thus don't have long nails, lots of girls I know do have long nails, and still manage to function just fine on a touch screen.
Maybe it's just practice, I don't know.

Maybe you just assume they function "just fine" on a touch screen. Ask them about it and see how frustrating they think it is not being able to type with their nails.
Whatever the case, it doesn't really matter. That's like saying because pants are "in" I should just "get used to it" and stop wearing skirts.

if you look at it from people who are "used to it" they don't complain much about the touchscreen not being able to use their (short)nails.

as for long nails, theres techniques for that.
theres even other options like a stylus, touch gloves, maybe this or this.
