How intense does the Yaoi get in this show? I'm fine with it if it's subtly portrayed, but if they show them making out with tongues and shit I don't think Ill enjoy it so much.

If you are worried about that, you might as well give it up. There as some light contact, but I'm pretty sure no shit.
The name queer-rat came from a Japanese kanji that showed 2 men in a 69 position -- indicating the queerness (using the original definition of the word) of the creature in it being created from a queer union of man and a man-like naked-mole rat -- just enough of the naked-mole-rat's DNA to make it look non-human enough to not trigger the death response even thought genetically, it had the same 23 pairs of chromosomes as humans.
One of the genetic alterations that went into the modern human was that of the bonobo chimps who, being human's closest genetic relative on the planet are known for their diverse and plentiful sexual combinations to relieve all sorts of tensions, though the females tend to dominate. I think all or most of them experiment with same-sex relations, as boys and girls both, often, go through stages where they are more comfortable around members of the same sex, but I also got that most if not all ended up in cross-sex relations for reproductive purposes.
Certainly learning to fuck as a reaction stress and tension instead of getting violent seems like a better solution in general, especially when they appear to be having a hard problem keeping the species alive. But that's also the reason why, out of practicality, most would end up in cross-sex relations -- but a complete lack negative church programming around sexuality seems to free them to experiment freely in their youth with seemingly no social or emotional baggage or guilt surrounding their sexual explorations.
Certainly if you are afraid of people not programmed with fear of same-sex (not fear necessarily as from being hurt, but fear of social stigma being as great a contributor to such as any other aspect) relations as you have indicated, it may make you a bit uncomfortable, but it's not hentai and certainly suitable for teens.
Looks like I was right about Death Feedback but it still leaves the question of who killed Kiromarus army.
Why? It was the red-haired girl who thought she was a queer-rat -- so killing another species would give her
no pause -- I think Kiromaru even said she used her Cantus to disarm then destroy them.
Would have loved to see the implications of the revelation had on that human society.
I doubt there were any, as I don't think it was propagated to others. I was ethically forbidden to examine
the genome -- so I doubt they'd spread the news around.
Spoiler Observations:
The "death feedback" really was hard-wired into their DNA, I thought it was partly brainwashed in, I was wrong![
Except it was misconfigured -- the redhead had THOUGHT she had hurt one of her own when she blew up Kiromarus and the blood exploded all over Saki. However, she hadn't killed a human, but had gotten confused by the trick of the splattering blood.
This got emphasized when Saki saw the result of her trick -- and saw the redhead dying -- and the reaction started to trigger in her as well -- but she was able to talk herself out out of it. In the same way I believe they
*could* have talked Redhead out of self-destruct had they tried -- as it was obvious after her revelation, that
she was out killing the queer-rats who raised her, for their betrayal -- and that wasn't triggering any problems.
#3 Too bad Squealer, you're NOT human at all.
He was entirely human right down to the same number of chromosomes -- with animal DNA inserted to make
him a Chimera -- It's not even as different from a donkey as is a burrow -- as they have different numbers of
chromosomes. The only other living creation that had 23 pairs of chromosomes, according to Satoru was a Palm Tree. That's a fairly unique number.
While it was not a bad anime, and was a well told and well constructed story, it really gave me a sick feeling at the end how those with power supposedly limited themselves -- to live w/humans, BUT, in the end changed those humans into sub-humans so they could still have total power over them....a sick but not unrealistic view of humanity......
*shiver*.
