Delete .torrent Files?
« on: October 01, 2012, 04:11:15 AM »
What will happen if I delete my .torrent files? Can I still seed them? If they need to be seeded in the future will I be able to seed them if I deleted my .torrent files?

You will need to re-download a new .torrent file from the tracker site, that's all.

...although, it will get very tedious if you have torrents in the hundreds...
I'd say just keep the file if you think you'll need it later. It doesn't take any noticeable space.

Deleting a .torrent file will not affect any torrent that is still in your torrent queue at all, whether downloading, seeding, or paused/stopped.  It's advisable, however, to keep your .torrent files for 3 reasons:
- Restarting torrents that you have removed from the queue, either on purpose or by accident (it happens more often than you might think).
- Keeping a record of torrents you have downloaded in the past.   Every client that archives .torrent files will let you know if you later attempt to restart that torrent, whether by accident or on purpose (to add trackers).
- Restarting torrents after you have moved them to a new location.  There's a number of other ways to do this, but having the .torrent files can make it a lot easier, if you're moving a large number.

If you really care to, however, you won't break anything by deleting the .torrent files.

If you still have the files associated with a .torrent you've deleted, you can re-seed it by downloading the .torrent again and pointing it to those files.
Follow the re-seeding guide for that: http://wiki.bakabt.me/index.php/For_First_Timers#Re-seeding_Downloaded_Files_with_Different_Clients
