The whole public/private tracker thing doesn't make much sense to me, as it seems the vast majority of torrents are available on both. I'd be different if the private tracker had all the very popular torrents and the public one had everything else. Actually, it seems the only thing exclusive to the private tracker is hentai, which I don't have much interest in anyway.

It does make a difference, actually. It doesn't to the individual user, but it does to BakaBT. On the main page, near the top of the left panel you'll see BakaBT statistics. The very last item listed is "Overall ratio of our pooled peers is 21.394."

Now, this is the overall ratio of all members combined. I believe it does not include public leeching/seeding, since the number would be almost exactly 1 if it did, since all leeched and seeded traffic that ever happened would be tracked, and all leeched traffic would theoretically equal all seeded traffic.

Now, if you leech publicly and seed privately, you are hitting this ratio twice - once when you leech, because people seed to you and contribute to that ratio, and then again when you seed, because your seeding is contributing to the ratio.

Obviously, if you leech from another site and seed privately, you are only hitting the ratio once, unless you're happen to grab a public torrent uploaded from BakaBT.

On the other hand, if you seed publicly, you are counteracting the effects of your public leeching. Assuming people only leech privately from you, that ratio declines because the leeching is being counted but the seeding isn't. Theoretically, once you reach a 1.0 ratio, you will have completely negated your effect on the global ratio (in actuality you haven't, because of things like (a+x)/(b+x) =/= a/b, and your client may have failed to report some statistics, and other little things like that).

That statistic supposedly has some effect somewhere. I don't know what it is.

And on the hentai thing, I've heard that you actually can leech hentai publicly. It's just harder to get to for non-members.

--- End quote ---

The ratio requirement is not actually for the benefit of the site. It's for the benefit of the user. Think about it - does the site really benefit from preventing you from leeching? Do other users?

This is another concept that's been lost over time. When you sign up as a user, you are more signing up to a ratio tracking service. The access you get to an excellent archive of media is only part of it. As any proper ratio tracking service would do, you are notified and warned when your ratio drops to extremely low levels so you can work on building your ratio back up. It's the same concept as, say, a laptop's battery monitor. When your battery gets low enough, the laptop hibernates automatically.

That is exactly why I recommended what I did to you in the first place. If you don't feel the need to know what your ratio is, there's really no point in being a member. And if you leech publicly and seed privately, same thing, because your ratio would no longer be an accurate representation of your actual activity.
