Looking for free program that opens PSDs

I haven't had to deal with these in several years, so all I can offer are some thoughts, which may be useless. Anyway.
Acrobat Reader? Or a full version of Acrobat? Tried IrfanView? Or Open Office, both Writer & Draw? Possibly even WordPerfect or one of the Corel image editing products? Of course, if you have access to try them, but do a little searching and see if any of them are either supposed to handle PSD or if any of those are supposed to have plugins of some sort to do the job.
I'm wondering if your trouble is with all *.psd files generically, or if it is something about the one(s) you are interested in. Any chance it's been encrypted/password protected against editing?
It sort of blows my mind that Adobe doesn't offer a Reader option of some kind. That's why the questions about password encryption or need to edit/convert. Any idea what version of Photoshop the file was created in (or even if it was in Photoshop)?
What is your certainly level that it is actually an uncorrupted PSD file and not somehow mis-labeled?
Not sure I can do much with it, but if you can post a link to the file(s), or similar ones, then someone might be able to take a few cracks at it and see if they can analyze the problem a bit more?

E^2 - I also see Photoshop Elements, Corel's Paintsop Pro, Google Docs and Quicktime Image Viewer suggested in some other locations.
Another EDIT: I used IrfanView a lot to open *.psd files in the past. Even those generated in CS3, but most of my work was in PhotoShop 7. IrfanView even respects the visible & invisible layer settings. The problem is, it can only view the stuff toggled to be visible. However, whatever is visible can be Saved As a generic single layer file, such as a *.tif *.bmp etc. I just opened a number of *.psd files I have archived with the latest version of IrfanView. I think we need a little more input from you on exactly what you are trying to accomplish here. I'm fairly convinced at this point that you're interested in more than just viewing. You need to export/convert all the layer and meta information, don't you? ]

Since Photoshop CS5 came out a few years go? I'm fairly certain most of the PSD files today were created using CS5, i just checked out corel pretty much all of their products are commercial now, can't find a free editing tool from there to open PSD, adobe reader couldn't read the files ether.
Yes i do need do to more than just viewing, i need to edit them into proper .png images ready for use. I'll try your IrfanView you suggested and see if it will do the job.

Yep certainly can see the PSDs in InfraView just can't edit them.
