27" vs 2x 23.6" monitors
« on: October 13, 2012, 05:05:14 AM »
so, as the time for my new machine approaches, I am wondering if I should get just 1 27" monitor or two 23.6". . .

at first I was like "pfft, 2 monitors is way better then 1"
but then I saw this 27" monitor at work and I almost jizzed

so I came to the best forums in the world to start a thread about it. . .

I currently have a 20" Acer, and a 32" 720p TV,
monitor is going away, I'm keeping TV + whatever setup i get

two 21.5" monitors. 32" 720p seems blurry as hell

most likely what you saw at your work is a 27" IPS monitor with 2560x1440 resolution.

what native resolution do you intend to target? as much as possible you should aim for the smallest pixel pitch from a monitor, this is to maintain the sharpness of the picture.

a simple highest pixel pitch of monitor per size:
21.5" = 1920x1080
24" = 1920x1200
27" = 2560x1440
30" = 2560x1600
straying from this graph usually leads to less sharper picture.
also, going 1080p on a 27" is as bad as going 720p on a 32" tv, reason? you're nearer your monitor which makes you notice the blurriness even more.

1] if you plan on getting a TN monitor, skip this and proceed to option 2, if you're aiming for IPS though keep reading.

27" with 2560x1440 would be the ideal choice, but in terms of price it wouldn't be a good choice.
30" 2560x1600 would be the next thing and the price isn't that far away either.

edit: another pros of going 30" is you can throw your shitteh(no offense) 32" 720p tv.

good IPS monitors that i know are:
[$1,199.99]Dell UltraSharp U3011 30" Black 7ms IPS-Panel
[$999.99]Dell UltraSharp U2711 IPS-Panel Black 27" 6ms WQHD

2] with TN monitors you could save a "few" money, although you'll miss the e-peen of an IPS monitor, and effectively have a great sort of monitor for it's purpose.

[$250-600]1080p 27"
[$700-1,200]1440p 27"
note: 30" TN hardly exists, well at most they're not worth it.

If you work graphic programs or the like, where you are required to basically keep track of the end product, all of the tools and the working window, go for 2 monitors. If not, go for a 24 inch one and save some cash on beer and hoes. Unless you sit 2m away from your monitor, I'd say a 27 inch one is too big to really be of any use or be worth it.

^ oh yeah, the "size" vs distance, indeed, anything over 24" at a viewing distance of less than a meter is too big, simply put your eyes cannot see the vast area of the display.

A new lower cost, faster response IPS variant.

The panel is the same as the $800 samsung, but the base seems nicer.  The feature set, and apparently the image quality, color accuracy, and viewing angles, are all significantly better than the cheap E-IPS displays on ebay.

Probably just one additional monitor. Personally I would say additional displays are only needed when there isn't enough screen space.

A few people at work (programming) are using 27" monitors and are very pleased. For that purpose, I personally prefer dual 20" 4x3, but for film watching, 27" may be nice. Here at home I just installed a 23" WS for watching and stuff, and am very happy. I've never been able to feel comfortable with dual WS, the physical distance from left to rigth edge just becomes too large...

but its soooo big, and I almost jizzed

oh and my TV is sitting a lil far away (I turn my chair to the side and watch anime on my TV, like 5 feet away)

so, from what I read 1 monitor should be enouhg . . . so its better to shoot for a biggie? its cause I saw an asus for like 300 but it was fullHD (1920x1080)

or for the same 300 bux (or like 320-ish)
I could get two asus 23.6" (1080 Full HD)

but yeah, if you think 27 with 1080 is NOT worth it, then I might as well just get a 24" or something

I am usually positioned around 1.5 ft (around 45 cm) away from my monitor

If you want something big to watch movies on from a bit afar then just get a nifty TV. I don't find monitors bigger than 24" to be comfortable to work on.

Even if you only get just one you don't really need a huge screen when you're that close. Half a metre is not that far.

Will need a taller chair for that ;D.
Although, I rather keep the screen wide just because often enough lines get too long, which gets worse when diffing.
