The System itself uses less resources, since components are only loaded when needed and unloaded again when no longer needed.

Made a difference on my notebook of 0.5GB RAM usage. (Win7 1.5GB vs Win8 1GB Ram system usage, 64bit edition)

Not entirely sure that's relevant, actually. My Windows 7 PC, when I first start it up, sits at around 1.1GB RAM used when idle. So I think it's more to do with what programs and services you have running (antivirus, update schedulers, and similar services) than the OS itself.

^I don't know if that's the case. But if you're running the same programs on windows 8 as on windows 7 then I would assume that the difference in RAM usage comes from the OS.

I would highly recommend updating (though, perform a clean install) to Windows 8.

Then mod it to support Windows 2012 Server's ReFS.

As this should help resolve some of the issue people have when it comes to PROPERLY organizing their torrents. While the file name will still have the 255 character name, the path length is 32,000 characters. Pretty sure all my issues happen because most of the file names leave you with but a few characters remaining in the Path Length.

-Note: I need to test this but had to delete the files that were tripping the 'Destination Path is too Long' Error in order to reformat the drive as ReFS....and BakaBT doesn't support uTorrent 3.2.3 (at the time of this post) so I can't re-download the files and try and move them around  :(

UPDATE: Nope, still has the freaking limit....crap. Oh well, least ReFS is more resilient than NTFS

Now I see a few people here complaining about the Metro UI, which I find funny since most of you probably had a 'Metro UI' layout on your computer since you've been using Windows.

"What do you mean?" You ask? How many desktop icons do you have on the desktop? More than 5 (Recycle Bin, Computer, User's Files, Control Panel, Network)? Congrats! You've been using a Metro-like UI and didn't even notice it.

Yes, I know in Windows 8 programs still put shortcuts on the Desktop when they install...this'll probably diminish over time as they update to be Windows 8 Compatible (read Metro-based Interface).

My few issues:

-the fact that the Charms Bar needs a regedit to function properly if you have a Multi-monitor setup

-Metro UI's default search is Apps, so WIN Key + Search has me clicking on 'Settings' or 'Files'

-Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Future Soldier starts up on the screen that's not designated as the 'Metro UI Monitor' (screen that Metro opens on) when using Mult-monitor setups.

im much more used to pinned apps onto the taskbar, i only got like two folders on my desktop and nothing else, pop that folder and you see the jumbled apps.

also heres another thing that makes metro-ui horribad, each icons covers everything under it, i cant even appreciate the wallpaper anymore ._. unlike the pinned apps on a fraction of the screen.

Don't stay in the Metro Environment then  :P

I only go there to do System Searches, only have 7 apps (Adobe Application Manager, Winamp, Remote Desktop, GW2, Skyrim [Cursor Lock], and EVE Online) pinned...in addition to the stuff Windows pinned (Win Explorer, IE10, WMP).

...hopefully in future versions we'll see the elimination of the Desktop UI, and Windows will simple run on 'everything'. Meaning you can take the version installed on your Tablet and drop it directly onto a PC

tbh the taskbar is much more space efficient than the metro-ui, i don't know why they didn't make it any more space efficient though, even android's application shelve is way more space efficient and much more wallpaper friendly.

There's a big difference between icons and live tiles. Or rather, several big differences.

@Ivon - let me introduce you to a little program called ReNamer: http://www.den4b.com/?x=downloads

You can just drag all the files that aren't playing nice in there and then add a rule to delete characters after a certain length, or delete certain things like group names, and so on. It's really quite easy. It might save you a lot of headache...

Personally, I'm doing the same thing I've done with every other major Windows release after Win 98 -- skipping Win 8.  As a desktop user, I just don't see any incentive for me to upgrade from Win 7 at this time.

Better performance?

I'm running an i7-2600k with 16gb of ram and a GTX 560 Ti.  Increased performance isn't much of a concern for me right now.

Issue is I need to either:
a) not seed back (check my ratio, I love to share ^_^)
b) spend a lot of time with 'relocate'

I don't even think the suppliers mean to do it. I hazard to guess most are running Linux, which doesn't have the 260 character limit in Name/Path Length.

There's a big difference between icons and live tiles. Or rather, several big differences.

I turned Live Titles off (cept for Weather)...course I also made all the Tiles 'Smaller', so that every tile would be the same size...even if it was the shortcut of an program (like TeamSpeak).

The only real difference is in what some of the Tiles can do, but those are Metro Tiles. But if you install all the programs you use, you'll see the Start Screen has all the shortcuts, rendering shortcuts on the Desktop obsolete, unless you're lazy and want shortcuts of the documents, pictures, videos, music, etc ...really hate that, #1 Pet-peeve when it comes to computers is people who litter the desktop with shortcuts to FILES. DESKTOP IS NOT A POST-IT NOTE BOARD!  >:(

Meh, skipping 8, waiting fer 9.  Much better than wasting time on a lengthy and unneccessary install.  I'd rather be watching anime.

For my two cents - For (detoskop) PC -> Oh heeell no. For notebooks and other portable devices -> Might be worth a shot. But then again you might just as well wait for the next version unless you are having trouble with the current one.

My personal experience with accountants is that they tend to make horrible decisions when it comes to software development.

My accounting lecturer last year insisted on giving all his lectures by scribbling on an OHP (I wonder how many of our younger members don't know what an OHP is?), and absolutely refusing to use Powerpoint, or anything to do with the computer.

So yeah, accountants are not a good benchmark for technological progress.
