Question about the size of 2 torrents of the same anime
« on: November 29, 2012, 04:20:50 PM »
Not sure if this is the right section of the forum to post this (sorry if it isn't), but here goes:

I want to download Break Blade | Broken Blade from BakaBT in 1080p. However i've noticed there are two versions, and the only major difference i can see is that one is dual audio. I only want the subbed version so this is of no importance to me, but then i saw that the dual audio version is nearly half the size:

http://bakabt.me/168664-break-blade-broken-blade-1080p-10bit-daman.html 8.01 GB
http://bakabt.me/161510-break-blade-broken-blade-1080p-ac3-bd-gg.html 15.20 GB

Can someone explain this to me please? I have plenty of disk space so it's not a big deal, i just want the best one, video and audio wise, in Japanese. Usually dual audio's are the larger torrents, so why is it the opposite here?  ???

Here's your answer...

Quote from: Daman version
Video: 1920x1080 16:9 H264/AVC (~3500 kBit/s) 10bit

Quote from: gg version
Video  23.976 fps ~6384 Kbps H.264

gg has almost twice the video bitrate of Daman, so it should in theory have better video quality. Daman does have the efficiency advantage of using 10-bit rather than 8-bit, but somehow I doubt that's enough to make up for a gap that large. The audio size is a virtual non-factor, as both of Daman's audio tracks combined take up about as much space as gg's audio.  In terms of other differences, Daman also has the official translations as well as gg's, but that's obviously irrelevant to the size.

So if space is not an object and you don't care which translation you're reading, grab gg's. Or maybe grab an episode of each one, see if gg's higher size results in better quality you can see, compare the subs if you care to, and grab the rest of whichever release you find better.

Got any old fansubs on HDD/DVD/CD? Please take a look at this thread.

In the end it's your call, the video specs and screenshots are there to assist you in your decision.
If you want the best, well, I would go with Daman's for the sake of dual-audio.

Ah, guess i need to read the specs better lol, thanks. I'll go with the gg version then, i just wanted the best quality, the subs don't bother me as long as they make sense. I store all my anime on a 3tb HDD so i always just download the best one, regardless of size. Thanks for clearing that up :)
