Starting to build my new rig, looking for opinions

The i5k is very powerful and won't bottleneck you anywhere for games etc. Only thing you would want an i7 for is using CPU heavy programs (like finding prime number, drawing fractals etc) But chances are the most taxing thing will be games and you will want the money for a better graphics card.
Also a 3-4gb graphics card is just overkill, I don't think Ivon understands how vram works, according to him you would need a 2gb card to play any 1080p content from the number of pixels alone (then you wouldn't be able to play the game because there is no ram left). Ok I sort of misread what you said, not everyone knows what TSW means. Still you manage to show that 2gb is more than enough unless you plan to put a stupid amount of mods on a game and buy a better graphics card just for that game. I use a 580gtx 1.5gb ram which does everything perfectly apart from heavily moded crysis.
Unless you are using 2x 2560x1600 monitors or are not prepared to turn down the settings a little bit on that one game that causes problems then do not worry about vram on the newer cards

a single 2560x1600 monitor alone would need at least a GTX680 to run on ultra(unless you can manage running the game at <30FPS), go figure once you hit multiples of that resolution.
ram starvation doesn't equate to not playable, the frame rate simply suffers, otherwise people wouldn't be able to play anything on ultra 4xMSAA on cards with 1.5-2GB vram GPUs.
im starting to think ivon is just trolling around.

Whatever you do, run dual monitors.

are you serious? wouldnt that completely bottleneck a 3 - 4 GB card?
anyways, anyone recommend any cases?
as I mentioned I was just looking over mATX and mITX, just because the cases look "iknteresting" thats what caught my attention, then I found the Lian Li PC-U6 and I completely fell in love with it. . .but its fucking expensive. . .
anyone know other companies that make "interesting" designs, but remain at a reasonable price (under 150)?

I would not go with this ITX, that is strictly for HTPC (aka Media Center computer).
As for the i3, you can easily upgrade later when cash isn't so strapped. Plus, it's adequate (meets "Recommended" requirements) for most of the games out, including Far Cry 3.

@dakarv: That's why I put the spoiler tag. In short I WASTED money because I ended up needing a better video card. Even BF3 was crashing after about 30min of play. It would get up to about 1.2GB of VRAM and just CtD with no errors; same would happen with Skyrim. Got the 4GB and the only crashing that happens is when I drag my arse to bed after hours of straight gaming :P
FYI: I'm typing this while running GW2 and temps are, CPU: 63c, GPU1: 61c, GPU2: 56c ...in a room that's about 80F (26c). So I know how to run a cool system :)
So it's more of "spend a lil more now, to save later", I could have dropped (I think) an extra $150 on the GTX 570's Step-Up and gotten the GTX 580 3GB ...instead I dropped an extra $480 on the GTX 670 4GB.
-Note: I didn't feel it was "money's worth" to buy the GTX 580 3GB at it's currently reduced price....that's now discontinued (ie a replacement would just be a refurb...i hate refurb)
GoGeTa006:
I was thinking, what if I just get the i5 with no vid card, and see whats up with nvidia mid year?
Do you think an i5 can handle dota2 and cs:go?
