Link.

When are those two coming out? At least when will the OLED come out?

Well unless they can figure out how to make the blue-light emitting quantum dots easily, I doubt QD-LED would be seen in near future. I doubt we will see it for a atleast 5 years.

OLED is already out I think. Samsung already showcased a laptop with OLED display (which was also a kinda transparent display). I forgot where I read that though.

you should've just bumped the 2013 thread, renamed it "future innovations" thread and ask the question.

neither will see the light of day anytime soon that we can hope for, or likely would be stupid expensive to be even a consideration, they're both having production issues.

OLED in particular is having cost production issues and short lifespan, they're much more expensive than a TFT panel and only has a lifespan of around 14,000 hours for the multi-colored panels.
if you want an example of one of the OLEDs check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_XEL-1, at 11" 960x540 screen size it costs $2,499.99, now if you could imagine how much would a 21.5" 1080P screen would cost.

OLED screens are used regularly on things like phones, however the production methods for it to make the larger screens desired for things like tvs is simply not there yet. I think it was GE or one of those giant companies that had created reel to reel production for oled dont know the quality or size for production.

well, what i had in mind were big screens like laptop screens (10" and above) and monitor screens.

edit: wait are you talking about AMOLED? i though that was different than OLED, more like a hybrid of TFT+OLED.
on second thought, the only thing holding back OLED/AMOLED from entering regular monitors and laptop screens is it's production cost drives the final product's price too high to be competitive enough.

^ according to wikipedia, AMOLED stands for active-matrix OLED, as opposed to PMOLED (passive-matrix OLED).
AMOLED displays require a thin-film transistor backpane to switch each individual pixel on or off, but allow higher resolution and can be larger (source & more details)

OLEDs show a lot of potential but I think we're a few years off from them being entirely practical and replacing traditional LCD panels. Among other problems, color accuracy is bad, their lifespans are short, and power efficiency (as low power as they are) is really bad - I remember reading that they typically operate at 19% efficiency these days.

Give it a few years and they'll be great. For now S-IPS LCD remains the top dog in displays.

oleds are supposed to have amazing color reproduction and only the blue had lifespan issues

^it has quite amazing color reproduction, but the color accuracy sucks, specially after it accumulates quite some age, calibration is a must in like every year or so.

I really do doubt OLED will ever make it to 40+ inch display's. OLED still have a lower lifespan comparatively, not to mention high power requirement. And even if they do, I would say it would have the same fate as plasma TV's.

At this point QD-LED seems like the only alternative present. As long as they get over manufacturing issues (which will eventually be solved IMO), I guess we will really be seeing this displays within a couple of years.

Though I guess one advantage OLED have is that they are flexible, so yes, I guess we won't be saying goodbye to them for a long time either.
