Why not just sell them off to other people who take the same course later?

Because once it's been used the price, at least here, reduces greatly. As well as many textbooks get new editions every year, and thus they drop in price from that as well.

Huh, here, we often sell them off for about 80-90% of the original price.
The new editions bring trouble, though.

That's the whole point of it.
They have a good marketable model going on so we'll be seeing them for quite some time.

Tiffanys:
They also keep you from reselling by making useless revision changes pretty frequently.

People would be better off with digital copies, and it could probably be considerably cheaper too without print costs. Though the greedy fucks would probably charge the same costs anyways. I hate that about unregulated monopolies...
