The Fall of Print
« on: December 24, 2012, 06:27:35 AM »
So, Newsweek is running it's final print issue starting Monday morning. While I am a child of the internet, this does sadden me quite a bit. I am a tactile person, and there is deffinitly something different about reading a magazine and reading an online publication.

Especially considering that Newsweek was a print issue that did a good (read:better) job of mixing it's print and online content, to create a fusion that was fitting for this stage in our world. I suppose then, it makes some sense, that it is going out by "choice" and not being driven into the ground. It was bought out a while ago by The Daily Beast, which, I think, is only an online publication.

I loved the last cover, I think it's aesthetically attractive, and makes at least a bit of a statement. I'm not a big tweeter, but I can't ignore the importance that it currently represents in our society, and something like it will exist for quite some time. Our society is self centered, and having other people retweet things you've said is a big ego boost to us all, regardless if that's the intention or not.

Anyway, what do you guys think? Is print going to die out quickly, or will it rally in the coming years?

I think magazine print will die out in the next few years or so.

Most of the information is readily available online, unlike the in past.  Not saying it hasn't been, but the internet, along with smart phones and tablets, have already forced print into the back seat.

Not sure if I see books / novels going to die out, and comic books are, for sure, here to stay.

I just think the magazine prints are going out of style.

Porno mags will probably last until the baby boomers are gone too.

Print is good for those waiting rooms where you look for anything to kill some time.

Not a big loss though.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

They will still be around for a very long time.
University textbooks in particular will lose most of its worth if sold digitally, they will make sure it stays.

I think that will actually be one of the first to go I think.

Not only are younger generations more inclined to technology, but they'll also start stealing(read: torrenting) due to the cost.

I can confirm that statement :]
The books alone took up would have taken up nearly half my income this period...

Why not just sell them off to other people who take the same course later?

Because once it's been used the price, at least here, reduces greatly. As well as many textbooks get new editions every year, and thus they drop in price from that as well.

Huh, here, we often sell them off for about 80-90% of the original price.
The new editions bring trouble, though.

That's the whole point of it.
They have a good marketable model going on so we'll be seeing them for quite some time.

They also keep you from reselling by making useless revision changes pretty frequently.

People would be better off with digital copies, and it could probably be considerably cheaper too without print costs. Though the greedy fucks would probably charge the same costs anyways. I hate that about unregulated monopolies...

I honestly can't remember the last time I read a newspaper or print magazine. I get all my news through digital mediums.

This will be true for me once I get rid of TV cable.

Doesn't that count as a digital medium? I still get some news from satellite TV myself and I was counting that in addition to online print, podcasts, Flipboard, etc.

I forgot to mention that it's analog signals.
