external hard drive
« on: January 07, 2013, 08:33:44 AM »
my computors memory is about full... so ive been kicken around the idea of an external hard drive. i like the idea of the external hard drive because it also make my anime collection mobile. im not the most knowledgeable when it comes to how computors work so ive got a few questions:

1. can i seed from an external hard drive as long as its hooked up to my computor?
2. can i move my current files and then reconnect them to continue seeding? if so how?
3. im thinking a basic 1TB hard drive, can you recomend a brand?

sorry for the stupid questions

thanks
-Matt

1. Yes, as long as it doesn't risk overheating.
2. Yes, just use the relocate function in your torrent client.
3. The WD Elements series is pretty cheap.

open up the case or use some cooler? the problem is that the harddrives are in small enclosures with no ventilation and (if you seed from it) will be constantly on.

1. yes, but it is not advisable with the usual external harddrives. although a DIY external harddrive will do so without problems.
2. yes, there are two ways to do so, using the relocate function works and/or manually tracking the files by re-starting the torrent.
3. ---
  • +1 on WD elements
  • [DIY - do it yourself]WD black and an external enclosure with a good cooling works better, although may lead to higher expense.
  • technically anything WD except most of their green drives.
  • stay away from >1TB seagate drives

Do be aware that we recently (a few months ago) had a discussion on how you should put your faith in an external HDD. The power supplies on those things are shit and your better off building a NAS.

i like the idea of the external hard drive because it also make my anime collection mobile.

They still need to be plugged to a power socket.

I have both 2TB Seagate Expansion and 1TB Seagate Backup Plus.. Both are good enough for me considering i have zero knowledge in computers and stuff  ;D
