Lyk omgash, so many.
Confused as to how this anime works, are the stories standalone? Do they connect? Are they required to be watched in a specific order? At current, I'm thinking that I should treat them as if they are a different anime each with their own respective seasons.

I haven't watched it before because I don't exactly like the idea of flying mechs in space, but after watching this M@D (the music for the M@D being a soundtrack from one of the Gundam animes), I can't help but to watch it. Gotta be some serious shit.

I don't exactly plan on watching all of them, considering that they all fill up three pages of MAL, but which ones should I watch? And do I need to know about the backstory if not the first original Gundam?

I don't think so, you can watch any series in any order. The only series that need to be watched in order is, Gundam Seed then Gundam Seed Destiny, also Gundam 00 then Gundam 00 Season 2.

That's true, but Endless Waltz concludes Gundam Wing.  I'm just saying HSSDamian might want to watch it.

And by the way, I recommend the 08th MS Team.  It's only 12 episodes long, and most of the action occurs on land.
