Seeding Question
(1/1)
Alectify:
Hello. I am very new to torrents so I apologize if this is a silly question. I've read the FAQ but I'm still confused about a few things.
1 - I have a laptop so I cannot seed all night. Is it acceptable to stop a seed when I turn my laptop off at night and start it again in the morning, and repeat that until I've seeded back as much as I download? Would this have any affect on my upload speed and connection too?
Again, I apologize if this is a silly question. I'm so new to this...xD Your answers are much appreciated. c:

There is no time limit on BBT, so you can safely turn it off. You'll naturally not upload as much as if it was turned on 24/7. Other than that, I'm not sure what possible effect you're thinking of.
Bozobub:
There's no actual rule on how often you seed, as long as you maintain an acceptable ratio. The only problem, as buchno notes, is that you won't seed nearly as much. In fact, it's possible you won't get much, if any, seed action at all.
Why? Because most — in fact, just about all — of the torrents on BakaBT are heavily overseeded. Leaving your PC running gives you a lot more chances to compete for peers to seed to.
Why can't you leave your laptop running overnight..? If you're worried about wear on your HD, you should be aware that spinup/spindown (when you turn your PC on/off, or when you let it hibernate) is actually far more wearing on an HD than spinning constantly.

Well, leaving it on 2/3 of the day can't be that bad...

seeding only when you are actually using the PC is perfectly sufficient.
i've never seeded through the night unless i was initial seeding a huge torrent.
