Software to permanently block program installation
« on: February 11, 2013, 03:04:36 AM »
hello all...

first of all, let me explain...
everytime i get back home, i found that new software have been installed in my computer
(click to show/hide)
so far i have tried COMODO (to block unnecessary connection), PROCON LATTE (to block some site in Firefox), and WINBUBBLE (to make the computer inaccessible as admin; meaning limited function user only)

so, i have to find software/method that can block program installation permanently, and i need it ASAP

thank you

Is just password protecting your computer and/or having a nice long talk with him not possible?

If you're using Windows 7 (and I think Windows 8 has it), you can put a password that will not allow any program to be installed without Admin rights. It's in the control panel ... and ... no idea where it really is located, lol.

Google it!

There's a family settings option in the Windows 8 User Settings that allows you to limit what apps can be used. Windows 7 might have something similar, but here's the path for Windows 8: Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Family Safety\User Settings\App Restrictions

Haven't tried it out, I'm the only person who uses this computer.

Assuming you are the admin of the computer, make a regular, i.e. non-administrator, user account for your brother and restrict him to that account. Then, you can activate that option that Tatsujin suggested. I was not aware of that option, but it makes sense that Windows 7 would have it.

Also, not sure what the heck you're Googling, but try this query.

I had to implement that option on the computer outside since my family are installing stupid shit and visiting "safe" websites, according to their knowledge - lol. I just cleaned the computer out, put a VPN on it and slapped a password protection on anything that tries to install or change the registry on the computer. It's been safe ever since then ... thou' I need to go back and check to see if they did anything weird to it.

Linux does this by default, as long as you're not logging in as root :]
...but that's not the answer you were looking for.

Don't worry. It never hurts to just blindly promote Linux at every chance you get.

First, hold your hand firm and straight, fingers together. Then bitchslap your brother with the back of your palm (that part is important as being bitchslapped that way is most humiliating).

Congratulations, it is very unlikely that you will find unwanted software on that computer again.
For one thing, Tiff is not on any level what I would call a typical American.  She's not what I would consider a typical person.  I don't know any other genius geneticist anime-fan martial artist marksman model-level beauties, do you?

how about leaving the app but wrecking it? e.g. deleting the exe file.

why? i've tried it once, replacing the exe file with a dummy and locking it so that it can't be deleted or overwritten, result is pretty much you can't reinstall the app to fix it.

edit: on the other hand, i found this http://www.thewindowsclub.com/how-to-prevent-users-from-installing-programs-in-windows-7
do step 1 & 4.

How is just unplugging the internet a good solution? That obviously isn't going to work for long, and it's kinda stupid... what exactly are they going to do with no internet?

You need to set them up a separate Windows user account and restrict its privileges so that it can't install anything.

Oh and if you wanna be a douche, you can get parental control software and restrict certain websites too... lol

Comodo is pretty much garbage... I'd stop trying to work it into some kind of solution... hell, I'd uninstall the worthless thing to be honest.
