So I've been playing with mine since Monday and I am overall impressed by how fast and nice the phone is with two exceptions: poor touch sensitivity(caused in part by firmware according to xda people) and poor color(especially skin tone, people all look like they have jaundice).
All you have to do is study it out. Just study it out.

Just had to take a look at this thread after reading such a bold title that suggested that there is an item out there that everyone must have, but not everyone does, "yet".

Then I had to google "Nexus 4" (no pun intended). Now with a knowledge that we are talking about another brick of a smartphone... and probably the severe lack of imagination among the designers that have been making these phones lately, I dug for important specification info.

Glass cover on all sides, obviously making it fail the drop test miserably.touch screen is the ever popular capacitive type which does not work in cold conditions and not if you have gloves on.

With both the durability and local temperature in mind, this is not an item I will be getting yet or any time until the global warming put local average winter temperature above zero degrees and pavement is made of soft rubber instead of asphalt.

Get a good screen protector and a good thick case ... a TPC case. This phone is super awesome for the price thou' I still dislike the fact that it doesn't have SD slots.

Looking forward to google's new phone this holiday ... and Android 5.0!

Doesn't just about every phone fail it these days? You can't expect a touch screen phone of that size to survive tbh, and mine ain't leaving the house until I get a thick leather wallet case to house it.

Oh, they exist, mostly by really unknown companies with outrageous prices geared towards work related environment.

Don't forget about Nokia. My N8 is pretty damn solid, have dropped it on concrete a couple times with no problems (luckily the floor also made it through without a crack). I would think the Lumias are pretty solid too, but I haven't held one yet.

Bah, threw nokias against the wall repeatedly to see them break into 3 parts, which I assembled later only to have them work again. So don't even get me started on Nokia phones that refuse to be destroyed.

lol, that title... "yet"

Phone looks like garbage to be honest, another iClone. Nothing new or impressive about it.

Anyways as I've said before in another cellphone thread... I wouldn't get one without a physical qwerty as a built-in feature. And I'd like to see one that reacts to non-warm surfaces like... nails. Again, built-in. Not some nail add-on.

Resistance based touch-screens allow you to do that. Since they detect pressure, you can poke them with a stick if you like. Likewise they operate at very cold temperatures because they don't give a damn about moisture needed to operate capacitive touch-screens.

In that regard I tortured my Nokia X2 in various ways already. Everything from dropping it unto asphalt and into the snow. That time I submerged into the river with my phone it stopped working for like a day. Then it still had problems recognizing USB for a while. I guess after all the water dried it started to work perfectly again. Likewise my last phone was also drowned, kicked, thrown, used it as a bottle opener and a bludgeoning weapon. Lasted for 6 years and the only reason I bought new is because the keypad started to fall off and I heard weird rattling sound in it... oh and the speaker was blown.

My projection is that my current one will last at least 4 more years and the main question is what phones will be available in that time. Maybe I will actually throw away money at one of those really toughly built ones.

Ah yeah, the Nokia's. Was tempted by the new Lumia partly for that reason, but the price and the fact I'd have to use it as a Windows phone deterred me. My Sony Xperia Mini pro was pretty rugged too. I mean, it fell out of my pocket, had the headphones yanked out and got run over by a car and I picked it up and plugged them back in again without issue. It's easy enough to slap a decent case on a phone, though admittedly I doubt it'd survive a car going over it. The main selling point for this one was the price. Half the price of all the competition with none of the loss in specs? I'll be having that thank you very much.

Fucking laughing SO HARD at the Iclone comment. Let me catch my breath lmao. I mean, iPhone don't charge you to make your phone a hotspot connection. Right? Wrong! There are a whole lot better features on android phones than the iPhone. Oh yea... iCrap sounds better ;P they like to charge you for a lot of things.

The title is there to amuse you people :P gonna go back and watch more steins gate on my nexus. Nyaaaaa..

FWIW, "random button area" doesn't really exist any more. The Nexus 4 doesn't have any hardware buttons aside from power on the right side and volume on the left side.

But who cares. I love my Nexus 4.

With Tiffany on this one. So some of the apps are different, but forget the OS and what's really different about them? Same sort of specs, same 8MP Carl Zeiss lens camera, similar RAM yada yada. Excluding their latest, each new iPhone has done something different, and then everyone else goes "that's a nice idea" and copies it. I'm far from an iPhone fan but gotta give 'em credit for that. The only innovation I've seen came from the Lumia who actually made an improvement to their camera for night-time photography and some developments on making the touch screen work through gloves and decreasing the motion blur when in use. Hardly a deal breaker.

Except that Apple purposefully left out a lot of features from the phones that always leave people astonished.
They also went far enough to leave them out from ealier versions and market them as innovations later.  :P

Because we can!

Personally I don't see why people argue about clones and copies. At this point who gives a fuck? They all look the same.

However what is notable in the design is how they package it all in shiny glass. I smell planned obsolescence from the first look at it. This is an attack of the general trend, not specifically aimed at nexus 4.

I don't have any love for Apple. The point is... there's nothing new or innovative about it. It's just a *.01 new version of the same exact damn phone that's just spun around and made out to be some vast magnificent advancement when really all they do is, uh... remove a button? add a few new apps? upgrade the hardware specs a little bit?

I mean honestly... where's the creativity, the innovation? It's just the same rehashed bullshit over and over ad nauseam.

When a cellphone gets a graphene battery or a DARPA's SCENICC style augmented reality display via a contact lens, then okay... yeah then maybe I'll be impressed and actually think fanboyism and excitement will then have its merits.

But right now? Aw hell naw.

If consumers preferred rugged designs that emphasized durability over a thin form with a gigantic screen, that'd be what sold. It's not as if more rugged designs don't exist.

Oh, they exist, mostly by really unknown companies with outrageous prices geared towards work related environment.
High end smart phones cost as much as that 4.3" model there. Here's the British version of the Galaxy S3 on UK Amazon. The US listing has a retail price of $899.99. Most people get the cost subsidized though.

the problem is that, based on standard economics, that design is way more successful than other designs(less parts, less machining, less labor, more popular, more sales), so why must they astray from profit then?

if ever the other designs gets more profitable than the standard all-screen-brick for a change, they would instantly jump into the bandwagon no questions asked.

Without creativity and innovation the market stagnates and we as consumers suffer. By competing and trying to achieve new and better things that's how we move forward.

If that were the case 10 years ago and everyone believed what we had then was successful and the epitome of cellular achievement then we'd still be using variations of this bad boy:

Everyone remember those? lol

We can do better. This isn't the pinnacle of human achievement folks. There will be better, and until that comes along you can count me as unimpressed.
