so you're saying we should fall back to tiny 2" screens with a 70% buttons phone?

what you want, the ones with hinges or sliders, similar to a laptop, are quite expensive to manufacture. they can't use plastic hinges or sliders since those would snap like a toothpick, whats more is that they're expensive to produce and mount.

like i said, if they can find something more profitable, they'll jump into the bandwagon no questions asked. so why don't you submit a proposal for a change since you're all hyped with your innovations.

Oh hoopedy doo da, software's slightly different. Real big fucking deal.

More than just slightly. It is a big fucking deal. And as South said, it's not a random button area. The button on the far right corner is my favorite button to show all active programs and it's as easy as sliding off the programs to the side to close them down or tap it to switch to it.

Personally I don't see why people argue about clones and copies. At this point who gives a fuck? They all look the same.

However what is notable in the design is how they package it all in shiny glass. I smell planned obsolescence from the first look at it. This is an attack of the general trend, not specifically aimed at nexus 4.
I liked the shiny glass but yes, it did scare me so I didn't use it as much for the first three days or so until I got my screen protector and back/side cover. I so love the slim design on this.

@ South - are you using a protective screen and a case? Back cover and Protection Screen I'm using. I ordered a different cover which wasn't as impressive as the first one.

actually, the whole mobile hotspot and tethering bullshit is US-only. Your carriers' doing.
In Canada we can tether freely years ago.

also, LOL @ iClone. as if it's the first slab-shaped touch screen phone.
The freedom offered by Android fundamentally differs it from iOS, it can look and work almost exactly like iOS or it can be completely different, it's all up to you. You don't have that choice with iOS.

@Tatsujin
I wouldn't use a film over the screen, the sensitivity is pretty bad as it is.

I tether freely with VZW. Of course, I rooted my phone and am grandfathered into unlimited data so... yeah. I get your point though. Depending on your carrier, you get hosed here compared to other countries.

Oh hoopedy doo da, software's slightly different. Real big fucking deal.

Not this again ::)

That basic design you keep posting is just the structure that works for the modern day consumer smartphone. So what if the overall shape is the same? I guess every car is just a clone of the Model T? I can hold any of these phones in my hand and immediately tell the difference. That is before I even get past the lock screen and begin to fiddle with the numerous differences in software between the various incarnations of Android, IOS, and Windows Phone. Android is open source for crying out! We could have a whole new thread discussing the pros to the open source nature of Android.

To say the software is slightly different shows you really have no real experience using IOS and the various incarnations of Android. No offense Tiff, but you seem to have let your hate for Apple blind you. This isn't the first smartphone thread I have seen you derail with your "Psssh, it's just another iPhone clone" comment.

Didn't you say in a previous post that you don't even own a smartphone?

TOPIC. STAY ON IT. THIS IS NOT ANOTHER iPHONE VS REST DISCUSSION.

@Tatsujin:
I've been running a Rearth Ringke SLIM for Nexus 4 since I got it, which is almost 3 months ago now. The selection of cases back then wasn't so good, hence the plain choice lol. I have a full body skin from BSE underneath the slim case. Probably not necessary, but I got the skin before I got the case, and I just snapped the case on without bothering to take the skin off.

@Tatsujin

Sensitivity is great on mine even with a skin over the screen. Except right at the very left and right edge, but the screen is curved there, so no surprises.

If every single car looked like this:

But just had some new wheels and maybe a different engine, perhaps some different interior... then fuck yeah I'd call them clones.

It's not like we're comparing a Model T to a Ferrari. It's like we're comparing a Model T to a Model T with different seats or an engine upgrade. Maybe a fresh new coat of paint.

Didn't you say in a previous post that you don't even own a smartphone?
Yep. No need for a cellphone in general right now. Don't see how that's relevant though.

Yeah, it's not. It has nothing to do with iPhone. It's about the worth of the Nexus 4 and how it's completely uninnovative, uncreative, and has done absolutely nothing new or worthwhile. I do believe that discussing at least that much is wholly on topic within a Nexus 4 thread.

There is no change in sensitivity on the Nexus 4 with and without the screen protector. I spent about two hours making sure this is the right phone for me, including the sensitivity of touching the screen. It's very responsive and accurate. Better than my old phone, the G2X.

You don't use smartphones, only seem interested in how they look rather than how they're used, and apply your argument to all smartphones more or less equally, unless they have flip out keyboards. It has nothing to do with the Nexus 4 in particular.

Have you had any luck with 10-bit stuff? Can't find a player that'll reasonably handle anything I've thrown at my phone.

I was thinking that the 10-bit videos are the problems here ... so I guess I was right? I haven't found a good player on Android that can play the 10-bit videos yet.

I can get them to play in s/w (depending on the player, one just refused to play it outright) but they're choppy. h/w mode drops video entirely.

i managed to play 720p 10bit (K-animation to be exact) on a dualcore A5 @1.2ghz, but awfully laggy. krait, A15 or even A9 should be able to tank 720p 10bit flawlessly.
although theres yet an ARM processor that can tank a full fledged 1080p 10bit.

Not to sound elitist, but it almost seems like you people intent on watching anime on a tiny screen of a phone. How to put it mildly... BURN, YOU HERETIC SCUM!!!

I'm honestly not away from my computer enough to have it be anything more than an amusement. Hell, even my phone spends most of the day plugged into my computer.

But for what it's worth, when you're not devoting much of the case design to the protective shell or a physical keyboard, you can get a rather large screen for a device you hold a few inches from your face.

I use smartphones. I just don't have one currently because due to certain circumstances I have no use for one right now. I also don't care how they look, I care about the functionality. It's kinda stupid how you asked that just so you could scoff down at me.

A keyboard isn't about looks either, it's functionality.

The reason that the same argument applies to basically all of the recent smartphones is that they've done absolutely nothing impressive.

I didn't ask you anything. You're probably confusing me with someone else in the thread.

I think it's worth considering the possibility that you're just not the intended audience for these things, rather than it being some sort of failing for the basic physical design.

These things are driven by software. More powerful hardware means more powerful software. If you just need a device to easily text, call, etc., then nothing wrong with that, but physical keyboards and the like are design tradeoffs that many would prefer not to have to make when a keyboard means less room for hardware or screen-space.

That said, there's the upcoming Blackberry Q10 that might be more to your liking.

So is it just me and South that purchased Nexus 4? Shame on you, BBT users!
I considered it, but it was my first phone purchase and the Nexus 4 was inconsistently available until shortly after I bought my S3. The lack of an SD slot was kinda offputting too.

The initial design was fine, back in 2007. It just hasn't seen any innovation since. The market has stagnated with it. I don't believe it's the pinnacle of cellular achievement. It's been 5 years. Okay, it's time for something new.

That Blackberry is about like every other blackberry. Tiny screen, tiny keyboard. Kinda worthless... HTC Desire-Z is the last one I liked...

I bought one on day one I just don't feel like arguing with people who obviously don't understand what nexus is about.

its actually more easier to pack a smartphone, or even  a 7" tablet, than a big screen laptop on a looong trip. plus its pretty much easier to work with a small gadget in a train or bus than a big screen laptop.
a 5" screen at 1foot away is the perfect size for viewing, the subs are readable and the picture looks sharper(well PPI is higher to boot).
