help port closed suddenly
« on: February 14, 2013, 04:09:28 PM »
Could someone help me? My ports aren't opened anymore. It used to work just fine. So my first guess it was closed by my provider. But then again I've been playing with my network settings two weeks ago. So I wonder if it's my mistakes after all. Anyway here's my situation:

- I created a hosted network to share connection to my windows 8 notebook. I usually used ad hoc to connect to other machine. But I can't seem to make windows 8 to connect to it. So I use hosted network now. While troubleshooting this problem I also change a lot of things like homegroup, etc...

- I also got caught by a virus almost around the same time, probably about a week before. But I remember that my port are still opened after I deal with the virus. Although I can't say that I've deal with the virus completely.

I think all of my port is all closed. Is this normal? Is there a port that are opened by default that I could check with my other machine? The one that are unlikely being blocked by my provider. I check 80, 22 and it's closed. Is it supposed to be closed? Could someone tell me what port should I check with my other machine. I need to check whether the problem is on my machine or on the provider side, before I give them a call. The customer service aren't that good so I'd rather not call them if the problem is on my side.

Thanks,

Ports are always closed on your PC until a program opens them. So if utorrent is running, and your firewall isn't blocking it, then it opens the right ports by itself - so there is no problem with ports being closed on your PC.

Your router, however, is a different matter - it opens ports for outgoing connections automatically, but for incoming connections (which I assume is your problem here - ie. you can still download fine), you need to manually forward them. So go to your router's setup page, and see if port forwarding is set up correctly. If it is, then the problem is somewhere else. If it isn't, then it is your router, and you just need to set it up correctly.

If you're not sure how to set it up correctly on your router, Google "[router name] port forwarding". There are a lot of guides out there explaining it.

To be exact, blocked incoming connections don't prevent you from seeding, but rather prevents other people from initiating your seeding. This can close off some peers from you, if they happen to be blocking incoming connections too.

About the router I don't have access to it. I have to call my provider to access it. Although I'm still inclined that the problem is on my computer. Because it used to work just fine, and my provider policy about torrent and p2p is pretty loose.

BTW, I can't access my computer through ssh. I could connect to it, but when I input my password. It says permission is denied. Do you think this problem could be related? I haven't tried to fix this because I thought the problem lies with my new user account (kinda copy paste the old profile) aren't being set up correctly in cygwin.

Any of you use uTorrent? On the bottom right side there's a green check mark button, it's showing green right now. Does this mean that my port is opened? Because when I checked it online my port is closed. How do you check them anyway. I use this site while my torrent and irc is running, it still says closed. I even click the "scan all common ports" on the right side, and it still says "No open ports found".

 >:( My torrent is working just fine. But share and perfect dark are completely dead >:(

Yes, if that green tick is there, then you are connectible, so there's absolutely no problem - you can connect to peers, and peers can connect to you. Are you actually able to upload and download at all? Because if so, it honestly doesn't sound like there's anything wrong with your system at all.

That appears to be a different problem entirely.

Are you sure about this? Like I said, my torrent is working fine. It's just that share and perfect dark are completely dead. It says port aren't opened. So I check my torrent port and p2p port with the link above it turns out both of my torrent and p2p port are closed. So I'm a bit confused about this. Which is why I thought the problem is on my side.

That's what I thought. I'm just not sure with the copy paste profile thing. I thought it could cause the porblem.

Anyway I've tried it yesterday on mac, it shows the same result. I don't know how to open a port correctly there, but since I turned off the firewall and it still shows the same result. So I considered the problem is on my provider end so I'm gonna calling them next monday.

Go to this site, enter the port you're using and click "Check Port":

I should get some sleep, you've already done that.

If you can use Internet, and haven't messed with your router settings if you have one, then likely that's probably it.

Guys thanks for the help. It already works now. I haven't got a chance to call them, but when I check a moment ago it is fixed. I guess the problem are on the connection itself. It's just weird internet is working ok, torrent is ok, just the port that is closed. I guess their doing some maintanance of some sort. I remember having problem like this months ago, only at that time the problem is on the torrent side. Thanks again guys.
