until when should i seed?
« on: February 20, 2013, 08:04:04 PM »
after i downloaded some torrent, when i'm about to terminate the torrent client, it said that the torrents are still in downloading/uploading.
my torrents status are "seeding"
and.. i still dunno about this stuff..
until when should i seed?
and hmm..
the infos of my torrent were like this..
status: seeding
seeds (for example): 0(71)
peers: 0(1)
down speed: 0 B/s
up speed: 0 B/s
eta: "8" character horizontal (maybe it's infinite symbol, ah?)
ratio: 0.00

and when i saw the For the First Timer

there's a FAQ like this:
I've finished downloading the files, so how do I seed back?
Once your download has completed, most clients will continue to run the torrent in seeding mode until the ratio is 1:1. If this is not the case, try some of these steps:
Simply press Start on your torrent again. Some clients might stop torrents that have finished downloading.
Check your client's settings regarding how much a torrent should be seeded to before stopping. Your settings may be preventing seeding.
e.g., uTorrent's 'Torrent Properties' dialogue box for each torrent has an adjustable ratio target. It automatically stops the torrent when you hit the target ratio or seeding time.
If you have removed the torrent from your torrent client but still have the downloaded files on your disk, read on to learn how to re-seed the files.

i have set my ratio setting to stop seeding until 1:1
but still nothing different with the status.. and still seeding..

hmm.. tell me if i do something wrong..

thanks guys

Generally speaking it's best to leave anything you can seed active. But if something is overly seeded and/or has little to no peers, it won't hurt to turn it off, in case you want to move it to an external hard drive or burn it (or delete it!)

But usually you want as many torrents as you can get. The more stuff you seed the more people you're connected to to maintain your ratio. It's important to know that individual torrent ratio doesn't matter though. So long as your overall ratio is good you can stop seeding whatever else whenever you want. Membership is about encouraging you to keep up a good ratio, not maintain any particular torrent.

What xherok said. Though I generally make it a practice of mine to seed most of my individual torrents to 2.5 or 3.0...depending on if I liked the show or not, I'll seed it for longer. For example, season 2 of K-on that I have has been seeding ever since I got it and now has a ratio of over 50x. Depends on what you want to do really, but I'd say seeding most torrents to 2x or higher should keep you in the clear.

I think I can help you from the "non-seedbox" side of things.

The secret is to seed a lot of torrents.  Generally, I have anywhere from 150-200 (177 currently) BakaBT torrents set to "Forced Start" ("seed forever").  Out of those, 15-35 will actually be active at any given time.  I have no trouble at all fully using all of whatever % of my upload pipe I care to allow, generally 80% of max.

I've had no trouble maintaining a good ratio (~2.4; 4.9 TB up:2.0 TB down), even though my connection, like most people's, is quite asymmetric and I seed to the exact same swarms as anyone else. I don't pick torrents for "seedability", just for interest.  So take it from me: build up a small collection (20-50 or so) of seeding torrents, and you'll start to see those numbers go up pretty well, without having to really worry about it.  Remember, by the way, that it's not individual swarm ratio that counts, but rather the total across all of your torrents.
